The Indian contingent has suffered a blow ahead of the second T20I against New Zealand in Christchurch, as Ishan Kishan has officially been ruled out. Kumar Kushagra will join the main team for the match, having recently also been called up to the ODI team.
Nursing an injury, Ishan Kishan was also demoted from the batting order in the first T20I, before the BCCI officially confirmed a low-grade injury.
Kumar Kushagra added to the T20I team as cover
Earlier on Friday, BCCI revealed Ishan Kishan’s low-grade right adductor strain that he suffered during the first innings of the series opener. Hours later, the board took to their official website and announced that Kumar Kushagra has been added to the squad as cover for the second T20I.
The 22-year-old wicketkeeper batter recently impressed with his stints with India A and earned his maiden national team call-up for the last two ODIs to be played on the tour.
Additionally, he is also a part of the India A tour and is currently in Christchurch itself. Barring any changes to Kishan’s injury status, Kushagra will be back with India A after the second T20I.
Kumar Kushagra’s recent T20 exploits
Kumar Kushagra hails from Jharkhand and plays under Ishan Kishan’s leadership. He was a major reason why Jharkhand won the 2025/26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with a massive 69-run win over Haryana in the final.
The right-hand batter predominantly bats at number 3 and racked up 422 runs in 10 innings of the domestic competition, striking at 161.68 with four fifties. Kushagra scored 81 off 38 in the final of the SMAT, scoring 8 fours and five sixes, while also adding 177 runs for the second wicket with captain Kishan.
Apart from this, he recently scored centuries in the Duleep Trophy and India A vs Australia A matches, showing his great temperament against good bowling attacks.
