After guiding India to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup title in 2026, Suryakumar Yadav now finds himself in the news regarding his future as India's T20I captain.

Reports suggest that the selectors are considering a major change in India's T20I setup, with Suryakumar Yadav’s position as captain under the radar.

One of the biggest reasons behind the uncertainty surrounding SKY is his poor performance in IPL 2026.

Suryakumar Yadav's Poor Performance In IPL 2026

Playing for Mumbai Indians, the star batter struggled throughout the IPL 2026 season. Suryakumar managed only 270 runs in 13 matches at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54.

In the previous season, he scored 717 runs at a strike-rate of 167.91 and finished among the tournament’s leading run-scorers while registering five half-centuries.

In IPL 2026, however, he crossed the fifty-run mark only twice. His power-hitting also suffered considerably, with only 10 sixes and 28 fours.

Such a dramatic drop in form has reportedly forced the selectors to rethink their plans for India's T20I future.

Suryakumar's Tenure As India's T20I Captain

Suryakumar Yadav was appointed India's full-time T20I captain in July 2024 following Rohit Sharma's retirement from the format. At the time, he was considered the ideal candidate to lead India into a new era.

His captaincy tenure began on a positive note and quickly became one of the most successful periods in India’s T20I history. Under his leadership, India won eight consecutive bilateral T20I series. He also guided India to victory in the 2025 Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup title in 2026.

End Of Road For Suryakumar Yadav?

There have been several reports that Shreyas Iyer is the frontrunner to lead the team in the upcoming series against Ireland in place of Suryakumar Yadav.

If Shreyas Iyer is appointed captain, it could mark the end of Suryakumar Yadav's tenure as T20I skipper.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir and the BCCI are expected soon to make a final call regarding Suryakumar’s future as a captain as well as a player.

Indian Team will next play a T20I series against Ireland. The first match of India's tour of Ireland 2026 will be played on June 26, followed by the second match on June 28.
