In what could be heartbreaking news for loyal Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans, MS Dhoni may no longer be seen with CSK after the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) season. The legendary captain, who has been the face of the franchise for many years, is now reportedly moving away from the team.

It is important to note that MS Dhoni did not play a single game during IPL 2026. Earlier in the season, he suffered a calf injury, which ruled him out of the initial phase of the tournament. Later, after regaining fitness, Dhoni reportedly chose not to disturb the team combination.

Why MS Dhoni Did Not Play In IPL 2026

However, Dhoni suffered a thumb injury before the match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 15, which delayed his comeback once again.

According to CricBlogger sources, injuries were not the only reason behind Dhoni’s absence. Reports claimed that there were differences of opinion between Dhoni and the CSK management over the direction of the franchise.

Sources also revealed that the management had already started planning for the future by focusing more on younger players. Along with that, senior players were gradually being moved out as part of a long-term strategy.

At present, there is no confirmation regarding MS Dhoni’s retirement from the IPL. Even so, reports suggest that if he decides to continue playing next season, he is unlikely to represent CSK again.

A source said, “The relationship between Dhoni and CSK has deteriorated to such an extent that Thala will not be seen in yellow after the 2026 IPL.”

MS Dhoni Reportedly Upset With CSK

It is also important to note that reports further claimed that Dhoni was unhappy over some major decisions taken by the franchise in recent years.

Sources stated that transfers involving Ravindra Jadeja and Sanju Samson happened without Dhoni’s knowledge, which reportedly disappointed him.

At the same time, sources claimed that communication between Dhoni and the management became weaker over time. One insider even stated that Dhoni felt ignored throughout the season, despite staying with the squad.

Interestingly, MS Dhoni travelled with the team during IPL 2026. Even then, on match days, he stayed back at the hotel so younger players could spend more time in the dugout.

R Ashwin’s Statement Added More Speculation

During CSK’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, MS Dhoni appeared on the field for a lap of honor after the game. Former CSK spinner Ravichandran Ashwin later said that Dhoni did not seem as happy as before.

Ashwin said, “MS loves CSK a lot. Yesterday, when he was going for the lap (of honor), I didn't see that love. I just didn't feel that happiness."

Meanwhile, reports also claimed that Dhoni did not travel with the squad for CSK’s final league-stage match against Gujarat Titans on May 21, which added more speculation regarding his future.
