Sarfaraz Khan speaks up on mid season CSK snub [Source: AFP]
Sarfaraz Khan has spoken publicly for the first time after a frustrating IPL 2026 season in which he found himself frequently on the sidelines at Chennai Super Kings. Despite posting a strike rate of 169.47 in limited chances, the middle-order batter was often benched or used as an Impact Player.
On Friday, at the jersey launch of Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs, whom he will captain in the T20 Mumbai League, Sarfaraz calmly side-stepped talk of selection injustice and insisted his only job is to score runs.
How did Sarfaraz Khan do in IPL 2026?
Playing for CSK in his first IPL season in two years, Sarfaraz Khan managed 161 runs in 7 innings at an average of 23.00 and a blazing strike rate of 169.47.
His tournament highlights included a 25-ball 50 against RCB on 5 April and a quick 32 off 12 balls against Punjab Kings. His other scores were 17 off 12 vs RR, 23 off 18 vs KKR, 25 off 19 vs SRH, 14 off 8 vs MI, and a first-ball duck against GT on 26 April.
The Snub Of Sarfaraz by CSK
Chennai Super Kings bought Sarfaraz Khan for ₹75 lakh at the IPL 2026 auction, but his opportunities barely reflected the faith of that price tag.
Despite a strike rate close to 170, he was routinely left out of the playing eleven and repeatedly used only as an Impact Player. His exclusion became a talking point among fans and experts, especially as higher-profile teammates struggled.
CSK eventually crashed out before the playoffs, yet Sarfaraz showed no bitterness. After the team’s elimination, he posted on Instagram, “The best two months that’s been. My heart will bleed Yellow…”. It was a clear message of loyalty, even in the face of a puzzling lack of game time.

Sarfaraz breaks his silence on the snub
Two days after a cryptic social media post had triggered speculation about his frustration, Sarfaraz faced the media at the T20 Mumbai League jersey launch. He refused to be drawn into whether IPL performances now carry more weight for national selection.
“Whether it is IPL or anywhere else, if you want to do well in life, you have to perform (well). Whether someone notices it or not, that is their job. My job is to perform on the field,” Sarfaraz said.
“The toughest part of returning to (the) IPL was improving my strike rate because that was an issue earlier. I worked on fitness, fielding and batting, and I got good results. Whatever improvements are needed in future, I will keep working on them,” Sarfaraz added.
Even with a strike rate of nearly 170, he refused to call himself satisfied. “In cricket, you can never be satisfied. Every morning you wake up, you have to work and learn something new,” Sarfaraz said.
CSK’s poor IPL 2026 campaign
The frustration around Sarfaraz’s limited role was amplified by CSK’s overall failure. The team never found consistency.
CSK lost their first three matches. They fell to Rajasthan Royals by 8 wickets, then to Punjab Kings by 5 wickets at home, and finally to RCB by 43 runs after conceding 250.
Back at home, CSK won three of four. They beat Delhi Capitals by 23 runs, KKR by 32 runs, and then crushed Mumbai Indians by 103 runs at the Wankhede. A 10-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad was the only blip in this stretch.
The side couldn’t build momentum. A low-scoring loss to Gujarat Titans at Chepauk was followed by three straight wins. Against MI, DC, and a thrilling chase of 204 against Lucknow Super Giants.
CSK crash out despite keeping Khan out
Needing just one win to stay alive, CSK completely unravelled. A 7-wicket loss to LSG in Lucknow hit their net run rate hard. Then they fell to Sunrisers Hyderabad by 5 wickets at home.
In the must-win final league match against Gujarat Titans, CSK suffered an 89-run hammering, collapsing in the chase.
CSK finished 7th with a net run rate of -0.345 and were the third team eliminated. The campaign left many questioning team selections, including the underuse of Sarfaraz Khan, whose bat remained too often in the dugout.
