Sarfaraz Ahmed Retirement- How Pakistan Great Can Land In A Legal Case?

Sarfaraz Ahmed appears to be heading toward potential legal trouble just a day after announcing his retirement from international cricket. The former Pakistan captain, who currently holds a key position with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is also associated with the Quetta Gladiators franchise in some capacity in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Sarfaraz’s dual roles in Pakistan cricket could raise questions over a possible conflict of interest, as holding an administrative position within the PCB while being linked to a PSL franchise may be viewed as a breach of governance norms.

Sarfaraz Ahmed caught in conflict-of-interest row

Earlier this month, the PCB appointed former captains Misbah-ul-Haq and Sarfaraz Ahmed in the new selection panel for the men's national team. The two replaced outbound Aleem Dar and Usman Hashmi following Pakistan’s disastrous show at the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

However, it is worth noting that Sarfaraz already holds a key coaching position with the Quetta Gladiators franchise in the PSL. Moreover, Mishab-ul-Haq is the batting coach of Peshawar Zalmi and both ex-cricketers were expected to reprise their roles in the upcoming PSL 2026 season.

This could be viewed as a conflict of interest, as a national selector linked to a PSL franchise may influence decisions involving players associated with that team.

With both Sarfaraz and Misbah taking on new roles with the PCB, it remains likely that the two former Pakistan captains will leave their respective PSL roles in a bid to avoid any legal trouble.

Sarfaraz also in charge of Pakistan A, U19 teams

Back in November last year, the PCB also appointed Sarfaraz Ahmed to oversee both Pakistan A and Pakistan U19 teams. He is now in charge of their team operations, player development pathways, as well as coordination with the coaching staff.

While the Pakistan U19 team failed to reach the knockout stage of the 2026 ICC Men’s U19 World Cup earlier this year, they won the 2025 U19 Asia Cup in Dubai a couple of months ago under Ahmed’s mentorship.

Sarfaraz Ahmed announces his international retirement

Sarfaraz Ahmed announced his retirement from all international cricket on Sunday, March 15 in Pakistan. The former Pakistan captain fell out of national contention and played his final international match back in December 2023 during a series in Australia.

Having made his international debut in November 2007, Ahmed represented his nation in 54 Tests, 117 ODIs and 61 T20I matches over the course of the next 16 years. He also led the Pakistan team to its only ICC glory in the past decade, doing so by winning the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy in England. Under his leadership, the ‘Men in Green’ thrashed arch-rivals India by 180 runs in a lop-sided final.

He also led the Pakistan U19 team to 2006 U19 World Cup glory in Sri Lanka as a teenager. Incidentally, the Sarfaraz Ahmed-led Pakistan U19 team also defeated India to lift the world title, doing so in a low-scoring thriller in Colombo.
