SRH to take on RCB in IPL 2026 opener [CREX]
To the delight of cricket fans across the globe, the IPL 2026 season is all set to kick off on March 28, with RCB taking on SRH in the first match of the tournament.
Both these teams had contrasting IPL campaigns last season. While Rajat Patidar-led RCB went on to clinch the trophy, the Sunrisers failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Led by Pat Cummins, SRH finished sixth on the ten-team IPL points table, losing seven of 14 matches. So, moving on to the IPL 2026, the Orange Army would be eager to bounce back and silence their critics.
So, as they gear up for the IPL opener against RCB, here we analyse the SRH IPL 2026 squad to determine their strengths, weaknesses and likely playing XI for the competition.
SRH IPL 2026 squad
Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Aniket Verma, Smaran Ravichandran, Salil Arora, Heinrich Klaasen, Kamindu Mendis, Harshal Patel, Harsh Dubey, Brydon Carse, Shivang Kumar, Krains Fuletra, Liam Livingstone, Jack Edwards, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Pat Cummins, Zeeshan Ansari, Jaydev Unadkat, Eshan Malinga, Sakib Hussain, Onkar Tarmale, Amit Kumar, Praful Hinge, Shivam Mavi
Strengths of SRH for IPL 2026
Extraordinary firepower in batting unit
The Sunrisers Hyderabad have an incredibly deep batting lineup. Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head and Ishan Kishan form their destructive top-order, while the likes of Heinrich Klaasen, Aniket Verma and Nitish Kumar Reddy solidify the middle-order.
Additionally, bowling all-rounders- Harshal Patel and Pat Cummins can play handy cameos lower down the order, making their batting department fearsome for the opponents.
| Batters | Strike Rate |
| Abhishek Sharma in Powerplay | 160.3 |
| Travis Head in Powerplay | 182.1 |
| Aniket Verma in death overs | 178.1 |
| Heinrich Klaasen vs spin | 179.4 |
(SRH core batting group stats in IPL)
As evidenced by the above stats, Abhishek and Head can ensure flamboyant starts for SRH in the IPL 2026. Ishan Kishan's red-hot recent form (317 runs in 9 innings, Strike rate- 193.29 in T20 World Cup 2026) makes him a vital cog in the Sunrisers' top order.
Meanwhile, Heinrich Klaasen is a menace against spin bowling, while Reddy and Aniket can emerge as genuine match-winners in the middle and death overs.

Added to that, Smaran Ravichandran is an exceptional player (319 runs in 7 innings in SMAT 2025, average- 63.80, Strike Rate- 158.71) and could be an X-factor for the Sunrisers in the tournament. Thus, the SRH batting unit is definitely their biggest strength heading to the IPL 2026.
Multiple all-round options
Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Kamindu Mendis, Harshal Patel, Harsh Dubey and Brydon Carse made it into the SRH retention list, while the 2016-season champions purchased Liam Livingstone, Shivang Kumar, Krains Fuletra and Jack Edwards in the IPL 2026 auction.
Thus, they further strengthened their all-rounders' department through these strategic additions. All these players can contribute with both bat and ball, and given that most of them have international experience, they ensure quality and flexibility in the SRH squad for IPL 2026.
Weaknesses of SRH for IPL 2026
Fast bowling unit lacks depth
Sunrisers Hyderabad released Mohammed Shami ahead of the auction. Jaydev Unadkat is at the fag end of his career, while Sakib Hussain, Onkar Tarmale and Praful Hinge have yet to prove their mettle in the IPL.
Also, given that Shivam Mavi has had multiple injury setbacks and captain Pat Cummins has yet to fully recover from a back injury, which ruled him out of the T20 World Cup, the SRH fast bowling department seems to be lacking bite and penetration.
Although Eshan Malinga was one of their most impressive IPL 2025 bowlers with 13 scalps, SRH will desperately need a monumental effort from him, Harshal Patel, Brydon Carse and Pat Cummins to keep the opponents under the pump.
| Bowler | Economy Rate |
| Harshal Patel | 10.25 |
| Pat Cummins | 10.94 |
| Shivam Mavi | 11.34 |
| Jaydev Unadkat | 11.47 |
(SRH key bowlers in 17-20 overs phase in IPL)
Even if all their injury-prone players get fit and available, their death bowling could be a major issue for SRH in the IPL 2026, as evidenced by the stats above.
Opportunities for SRH ahead of IPL 2026
A golden chance for Pat Cummins to complete his trophy cabinet
Legendary Australian cricketer Pat Cummins scripted history as he led his team to a historic ODI World Cup triumph in 2023. The veteran cricketer is also the lone Australian skipper to win the World Test Championship; however, he has yet to get his hands on the IPL trophy.
Although Cummins led SRH to the IPL 2024 final, the Orange Army lost the ultimate clash to the Kolkata Knight Riders. So, considering the IPL trophy has been elusive for him, the IPL 2026 gives Cummins a golden opportunity to break a ten-year title drought for SRH.
Threats for SRH ahead of IPL 2026
Inexperienced spin department
SRH lost Adam Zampa to a mid-season injury, roping in Smaran Ravinchandran as his replacement. Although Zeeshan Ansari looked promising with the ball, the Sunrisers couldn't form a potent spin attack in the 2026 auction.
They signed Amit Kumar and Praful Hinge, who have played six matches combined. So, they will heavily rely on Zeeshan Ansari, given that the overseas limit won't allow them to keep both Liam Livingstone and Kamindu Mendis in their playing XI.
SRH predicted playing XI for IPL 2026
Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Heinrich Klaasen, Aniket Verma, Harshal Patel, Pat Cummins (C), Zeeshan Ansari, Eshan Malinga
Impact player- Smaran Ravichandran
Expected finish: May enter the playoffs.
