The SA20 2026 season, also the fourth edition of the tournament as played out earlier this year, has set a new benchmark for the league with record viewership and digital engagement. On Thursday, April 23, the league released official numbers to confirm that the SA20 2026 season has become the best-performing edition since the tournament commenced back in January 2023.
The data reveals that at least 22 of the 34 matches played in the season had capacity crowds at the stadiums. Moreover, even the final was sold out in Cape Town where the Sunrisers Eastern Cape franchise lifted its third SA20 title in four years.
SA20 2026 buoyed by record crowds
In an official data unveiled by SA20 on their official website, the league confirmed that 22 out of the 34 matches played in the SA20 2026 season witnessed capacity crowds. The final was also sold out in Cape Town, thus marking the fourth consecutive year of an SA20 title clash being sold out at its designated venue.
Unlike past SA20 seasons, the 2026 edition of the tournament had a launch date of December 26, i.e., during the holidays. The timing and scheduling of the season worked wonders for the league, as data indicates that at least 92 percent of fans felt “satisfied” with their match-day experience.

Around 90 percent fans have also stated that they will be recommending the league to their friends and family. Furthermore, the SA20 2027 season might well be bracing up for a strong retention of fans, since 88 percent of the fans have claimed that they will be returning for season 5 of the league next year.
Rapid increase in digital audience, in South Africa and in India
The SA20 2026 season also witnessed a rapid increase in digital viewership. SuperSport, also the official broadcasters of the league, recorded a 17 percent increase in the number of viewers per match in comparison to the previous season.
Overall home consumption went up by 30 percent, and the media impact of the league surged to a 120 percent growth in local reach.
T20 fans in India also seemingly took a special liking to South Africa’s SA20 this year. JioStar, the league’s official streaming platform in the cricket-crazy nation, witnessed an increase of audience reach by 11 percent.
JioHotstar also recorded a 33 percent increase in video views, and the media reach went up by 257 percent this SA20 2026 season across online, print and broadcast.
Graeme Smith celebrates SA20’s popularity surge
SA20 league commissioner Graeme Smith has issued an official statement addressing the ever-expanding popularity of the tournament. The former South African captain said “SA20 has become a platform where strong performances lead to global opportunities, while also strengthening our cricket ecosystem.”
Smith added “Seeing 22 of 34 matches sold out reflects the strong connection fans have built with the League and its franchises. The holiday crowds created an atmosphere that brought out the best in the players and outstanding cricket, and this combination captured the true DNA of the League - delivering a premium entertainment product while creating real impact for South African cricket.”
SA20 2026: A recap
The Sunrisers Eastern Cape franchise, led by Tristan Stubbs, won the SA20 2026 title by defeating Pretoria Capitals in a lop-sided final in Cape Town on January 25. The outcome marked Sunrisers’ third SA20 trophy in four seasons.
Senior wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock won the ‘Player of the Tournament’ as well as the ‘Batter of the Season’ awards for scoring 390 runs. Ottniel Baartman from Paarl Royals bagged the ‘Bowler of the Season’ award for picking up 20 wickets in the competition.
The league is expected to return with its fifth edition later this year in December.
