The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) collapsed to a huge defeat against the Rajasthan Royals in match number 32 of the IPL 2026 season. Playing in front of their home crowd at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, the outcome marked LSG’s fourth straight defeat this tournament.

With just two wins and five defeats from seven games, LSG’s qualification prospects for the playoffs took a massive hit on Wednesday, April 22. 

As they head into the second half of their league stage, here is a look at LSG’s entire scenario for making it to the top four sides of the tournament before the knockouts.

How can LSG qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs?

The LSG franchise, under the leadership of Rishabh Pant, has registered just two wins and five defeats from seven matches. 

Currently placed number nine on the 10-side IPL 2026 points table, the franchise has accumulated just four points so far at a dismal NRR of -1.277, the worst among all teams in the competition.

Finding themselves languishing near the foot of the table at the halfway stage of the league, LSG now face a steep and unforgiving road ahead. 

Fortunately, they are still mathematically in contention, but it would likely require a near-flawless run in their remaining matches to stay in the playoff race.

Ever since the IPL became a 74-match event in 2022, only one team has qualified for the playoffs despite registering only seven wins in the league stage. 

The RCB did so back in IPL 2024, by pipping out three other teams with 14 points each on the basis of a superior NRR.

All other teams across the four IPL editions between 2022 and 2025 have secured a guaranteed place in the playoffs by registering at least eight wins or accumulating a minimum of 16 points from their 14 league matches.

Compatible with the proven equation, the LSG franchise needs to win at least six of its remaining seven games to reach eight wins or 16 points in the IPL 2026 season. 

Such a turnaround would put the LSG, led by Rishabh Pant, in a strong position to qualify for the playoffs at the end of the league stage.

However, LSG can also reach the playoffs by winning five of its final seven league fixtures to get to 14 points. In such a scenario, fans of the franchise will hope that they can pip fellow contenders on net run rate, much like how the RCB pulled off the unthinkable in IPL 2024.

Seven matches into the IPL 2026 season, only one LSG batter has managed to complete 200 runs so far in the tournament. 

Senior opener and Australian captain Mitchell Marsh, with just 210 runs in seven innings at an average of 30, has emerged as LSG’s most successful batter of the season. However, Marsh’s underwhelming tally puts him outside the top 10 run-getters of IPL 2026.

In terms of bowling, LSG quick Prince Yadav is the current holder of the coveted ‘Purple Cap’ of the season. Yadav has so far picked up 13 wickets from seven innings at an impressive average of 16.76.
