On April 23, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced Mumbai Indians (MI) at the famous Wankhede Stadium. Although Chennai won the match comfortably, the game was not short of drama. Notably, during the MI vs CSK match, emotions ran high, and a brief on-field argument caught everyone’s attention.

The incident took place during the 10th over of Mumbai’s innings. After the last ball of that over, Chennai’s all-rounder Jamie Overton and Mumbai’s batter Tilak Varma got into a verbal spat. Naturally, this created a tense moment in the middle of the game.

However, things did not get out of control. This is because Suryakumar Yadav and the umpires stepped in quickly and calmed both players down.

As a result, the situation was handled well and did not turn into a bigger issue. Interestingly, after the match ended, both players shook hands and even shared a friendly moment, which showed that the disagreement was only temporary.

Ruturaj Gaikwad makes a shocking revelation

Later on, during an event, a young fan asked Overton about what exactly happened during that heated moment. At first, Overton avoided giving a direct answer and instead pointed towards his captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad.

“No, no, no. Maybe you should ask Rutu because he was the one causing it. On the previous ball...” said Jamie Overton.

Ruturaj Gaikwad then explained the situation in a simple way. He said that Tilak had hit Overton for a boundary, and therefore, he jokingly told Overton that he was bowling badly and should “go home.”

"Tilak hit him for four, so I told him, ‘You are bowling very badly. You shouldn’t be here, you should go home.’ That made him angry, and he said a few good words to Tilak, and then they started fighting. As he is from England, he says a lot of good words," said Ruturaj Gaikwad with a smile on his face.

However, it is not completely clear whether Ruturaj Gaikwad used those exact words, especially since he was explaining the story to a child in a casual setting.

Despite the brief argument, Overton had the last laugh in the match. Tilak Varma scored 37 runs off 29 balls but was eventually dismissed. Moreover, Mumbai Indians struggled as a team and were bowled out for just 109 runs, losing the match by a huge margin of 103 runs.

Later, when both teams met again on May 2, Overton once again troubled Tilak. During that match, one of Overton’s deliveries even broke Tilak’s fitness band, and interestingly, Overton immediately checked if he was okay. This showed good sportsmanship despite their earlier clash.

Jamie Overton’s performance in IPL 2026

So far in the season, Jamie Overton has been performing well with the ball, taking 10 wickets in eight matches. Additionally, he has contributed with the bat too, scoring 136 runs at a strike rate of 158.14.

Meanwhile, CSK, after a slow start, are slowly getting back on track. Even though the five-time champions are currently in the middle of the points table with four wins and 5 losses, they still have a chance to qualify for the playoffs. However, they cannot afford many mistakes going forward.

Looking ahead, CSK will face Delhi Capitals on Tuesday, May 5 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
