On Monday, Mumbai Indians (MI) secured an impressive six-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Wankhede Stadium.
As a result, this win not only boosted their confidence but also helped them surpass teams like Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and Rajasthan Royals (RR) in achieving a major IPL record.
LSG post a daunting target
To begin with, LSG batted first and put up a strong total of 228/5. Notably, this high score was mainly driven by powerful performances from Nicholas Pooran, who scored 63 runs off just 21 balls, including one four and eight sixes.
In addition, Mitchell Marsh contributed 44 runs from 25 balls, hitting six fours and three sixes. Moreover, Himmat Singh remained unbeaten with 40 runs off 31 balls, helping his team reach a challenging total.
However, in response, Mumbai Indians came out with strong intent. The five-time champions relied heavily on a brilliant innings by Rohit Sharma, who scored a quick 84 runs.
Mumbai Indians chase down the total with ease
Alongside him, Ryan Rickelton played an equally impressive knock of 83 runs. Because of their excellent partnership, MI managed to chase down the target of 229 runs comfortably, finishing the match with eight balls still remaining.
As a consequence, LSG failed to defend their total despite it being competitive. Notably, this loss also had a negative impact on their playoff chances, which are now hanging by a thread.
Furthermore, this defeat marked their sixth consecutive loss in the season, keeping them at the bottom of the points table.
On the other hand, this victory was important for Mumbai Indians. Not only did it end their three-match losing streak, but it also kept their slim playoff hopes alive.

Mumbai Indians achieve a major milestone; pip RCB, RR, SRH
More importantly, Mumbai Indians achieved a significant milestone with this chase. It is worth mentioning that they now hold the second spot for the most successful chases of 200+ targets in IPL history, having done it seven times.
In comparison, RR and SRH have achieved this feat six times each, while RCB have done it five times. Meanwhile, Punjab Kings (PBKS) lead this record with 11 such successful chases.
Most Instances of a Team Successfully Chasing Down 200+ Targets in IPL
- 11 - PBKS
- 7 - MI*
- 6 - RR, SRH
- 5 - RCB
Despite this remarkable achievement, Mumbai Indians are still placed ninth in the points table. This is mainly due to their low points tally and poor net run rate.
So far, this was only their third win of the season. Therefore, although they are technically still in the playoff race, their path ahead is extremely difficult.
In order to qualify, MI must win all their remaining matches. Additionally, they will also need favourable results from other teams, which makes their chances quite uncertain.
Looking ahead, their next match is against RCB on May 10 at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium in Raipur.
