India took on Afghanistan in the rain-curtailed first ODI in Dharamsala on Saturday, and while the hosts won the game, rather comfortably, the aftermath was all about Rohit Sharma’s unfortunate run-out dismissal. The Indian opener was sent packing in the most unfortunate of ways, and fans blame Shubman Gill for it.
Miscommunication is a part of cricket, and sometimes, two players who have played together for a long period of time can also be involved in heartbreaking run-outs, and that’s just what happened between Gill and Rohit in the first ODI.
Gill's error of judgement led to Rohit Sharma's run-out
Rohit Sharma was looking in ominous touch as the batter had raced away to a run-a-ball 16 as India needed 195 runs to beat the Afghanistan side. He was all set for a big score before disaster struck in the form of his wicket.
The incident happened in the sixth over when Rohit played a shot towards the mid-wicket region and charged for a quick single. Allah Ghazanfar ran across Gill to collect the ball as the Afghan player blocked his way.
With the bowler in his sight, Gill denied the single, but it was too late as Rohit was almost halfway down the track, and he was run out at the striker's end, with the opener visibly frustrated.
Rohit Sharma angry with Gill? Indian captain reveals
Shubman Gill played a match-winning knock, and after the game, the Indian captain was asked about the mix-up between him and Rohit, and the Indian skipper revealed that the senior batter had no complaints with him.

"He saw the replay; he said it's fine. Even in the last match that we played against Afghanistan, T20s, he got run out there as well," Gill said at the post-match presentation.
Interestingly, this is not the first time the two players were involved in a run-out against the Afghanistan side. It happened in the 2024 T20I series as well, when a mix-up, and an error of judgment led to Rohit’s dismissal for a duck. Deja Vu happened, and Rohit was once again sent packing in the first ODI.
Gill steers India home despite Rahmanullah Gurbaz onslaught
The first ODI between India and Afghanistan was a rain-curtailed affair, with the match reduced to 25 overs. Afghanistan were put into bat first, and despite losing three early wickets, the visitors kept on attacking the Indian bowlers.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the talented opener, punished the lacklustre Indian attack as he smacked a 48-ball hundred, and it was the fastest ODI century scored by an Afghan batter.
Thanks to him, the visitors managed to score 194, but that was not enough despite Rohit Sharma’s early dismissal. Gil, the captain of the side, played an aggressive knock 84* off 66 balls, and took down the Afghanistan bowlers to help India win the game by 7 wickets.
Gill built partnerships with almost every batter, as he remained unbeaten, and was amply supported by others as India took a 1-0 lead in the three game ODI series.
