In a major development, England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting May 10 at home.
The series, which serves as a key build-up to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 beginning June 12, will now see vice-captain Charlie Dean lead the side in the ODI leg. Meanwhile, England have named Maia Bouchier as Nat Sciver-Brunt’s replacement in the squad.
Why Was Nat Sciver-Brunt Ruled Out of the New Zealand ODI Series?
According to a Cricbuzz report, the England and Wales Cricket Board has opted for a precautionary approach after Sciver-Brunt sustained a minor left calf tear while playing for The Blaze against Warwickshire in the One-Day Cup.
Scans conducted on Saturday, May 2, confirmed the injury, with the medical team advising rest and further assessment in the coming days.
“The scans done on Saturday (May 2) confirmed the extent of the injury. "A period of rest" is the medical advice for Nat Sciver-Brunt with further assessment to take place in the coming days,” the report stated.

When Will Sciver-Brunt Return To Action?
While England has been preparing intensively for the upcoming World Cup, including training sessions with the British Army, there is no confirmed timeline for Sciver-Brunt’s return.
Her availability for the T20I leg against New Zealand and the subsequent India series, starting May 28, will be decided on a match-by-match basis.
“Sciver-Brunt's availability for the T20I matches against New Zealand and India ahead of the World Cup will be determined in due course,” the report added.
The England squad for the New Zealand series includes key players such as Lauren Bell, Alice Capsey, Sophie Ecclestone, Heather Knight, Emma Lamb, Linsey Smith, and Issy Wong.
The Hole In England's Wall Before NZ Series
In Nat Sciver-Brunt’s absence, Charlie Dean will take charge, while the experienced Knight remains a crucial figure in the setup.
The 33-year-old Sciver-Brunt has been a mainstay for England since her debut in 2013, scoring 4,354 runs in 129 ODIs at an average of 46.31, including 10 centuries and 26 fifties. Her absence is a significant setback for England.
Meanwhile, Maia Bouchier, who has played 18 ODIs and scored 482 runs at an average of 37.07, will look to seize the opportunity and make an impact if selected in the playing XI.

How Sciver-Brunt’s Absence Can Impact World Cup Ambitions
Now, Nat Sciver-Brunt’s absence could significantly disrupt England’s preparations for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, as she remains one of their most dependable players for the team across formats.
Her ability to anchor the innings in crunch situations and contribute crucial overs with the ball provides balance that is difficult to replicate.
Without her, England may need to reshuffle both their batting order and bowling combinations, placing added responsibility on players like Heather Knight and Alice Capsey.
Moreover, the lack of match practice ahead of a major tournament could affect Sciver-Brunt’s rhythm, making her availability and fitness a concern for England’s title ambitions.
