The IPL 2026 season is weeks away, and a lot of eyes will be on the Punjab Kings camp after they reached unprecedented levels of success in IPL 2025. Under Shreyas Iyer, they finished at the top of the table with 9 wins and 4 losses and played the final.

This season, the expectations will be higher for captain Iyer and co. Handling the added attention will be intriguing to see. They have retained their core group, apart from Josh Inglis, who was released and added some bench strength from the IPL 2026 mini-auction.

As the pursuit of their first IPL title continues, here's a brief look at the SWOT analysis ahead of the 19th edition of the tournament.

Punjab Kings squad for IPL 2026

Shreyas Iyer (c), Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Marcus Stoinis, Azmatullah Omarzai, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Harpreet Brar, Suryansh Shedge, Vishnu Vinod (wk), Xavier Bartlett, Yash Thakur, Mitchell Owen, Harnoor Singh, Musheer Khan, Pyla Avinash, Marco Jansen, and Lockie Ferguson, Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis, Pravin Dubey, Vishal Nishad.

Strengths of Punjab Kings

Explosive openers

The 2025 season proved to be one of the most fruitful seasons for the Punjab Kings opening pair of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh. Among the openers in the tournament, with over 400 runs, Arya had the second-best strike rate behind Abhishek Sharma, while Prabhsimran also finished in the top-5.

Notably, only Mitchell Marsh was the opener from the top-5 with more runs than the PBKS duo.

Indian batting depth

Led by captain Shreyas Iyer, who is likely to bat at 3, the Punjab Kings' batting line-up is full of Indian talent. Only one batter in their top-6 is an overseas player, which gives them the leverage to tweak with the team combination as per their need, without compromising quality in any of the departments.

Apart from their first-choice playing XI, they have Musheer Khan, Suryansh Shedge, Vishnu Vinod and Harnoor Pannu as formidable backup options.

Plethora of all-round options

Captain Shreyas Iyer has a variety of all-round options at his disposal. It helps them to bat deep till number 8, with the quality finishers like Azmatullah Omarzai and Marco Jansen slotted in at 7 and 8. Additionally, either Marcus Stoinis or Cooper Connolly will play in the top-6, giving them another bowling option, alongside Shashank Singh.

Among the other squad members, Suryansh Shedge, Musheer Khan and Gurnoor Pannu are all capable of playing as all-rounders.

All-phase bowling options

Their pace attack, led by Arshdeep Singh, has proven international quality, and all of Arshdeep, Maro Jansen, and Lockie Ferguson can bowl in any phase of play, depending upon the venue and opposition. Similar is the case with Marcus Stoinis, who can operate as per the team's requirements.

Bowlers like Cooper Connolly and Harpreet Brar can bowl in the powerplay and middle overs, and Yuzvendra Chahal can bowl in the middle and death overs.

Weaknesses of Punjab Kings

Inexperienced Indian core

Captain Shreyas Iyer, Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal have hundreds of international matches played among them. However, they are the only ones with substantial experience at the top level.

The likes of Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh are central figures of the side but haven't played any international cricket. This is the same issue with their bench option. Yash Thakur and Vyshak Vijaykumar have shown glimpses of quality, but as backups of Arshdeep Singh, they have no international caps as well.

Limited frontline spinners

Yuzvendra Chahal was a big buy for the Punjab Kings in the mega auction to bowl alongside Harpreet Brar in the middle overs. However, the leg-spinner started the season at a substandard level, and they did not have a quality frontline spinner to potentially replace him.

While Musheer Khan and Cooper Connolly can bowl, they are multi-faceted players who cannot be relied upon to bowl 4 overs in every match.

Opportunities for Punjab Kings

Shreyas Iyer to stamp authority as captain

The Punjab Kings made it to their second-ever final in the previous season with a young core group of players under Shreyas Iyer. He replicated his brilliance shown with the quality of the Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders teams.

However, this time around, many of his players will just be in their second season after impressing everyone in 2025. Hence, there will be a lot of data from the last season, from which the teams will prepare against them. Another successful IPL season would further build Iyer's stature as a leader after he was made India's ODI vice-captain.

Yash Thakur to build a reputation as a reliable pacer

Since the last IPL, Yash Thakur has been presented with further opportunities with India A and was the key in Vidarbha winning the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Currently, India have a limited world-class bowling option and is looking to build a pool of pacers. A good IPL 2026 season would help Thakur overtake his competitors in this race.

Threats for Punjab Kings

Untimely injuries

One of their lead bowlers, Lockie Ferguson, is prone to injuries. He bowled really well to start the last season as they wanted, but got injured and was replaced by his countryman, Kyle Jamieson.

With the serious pace that he brings to the table, he is one of the x-factor players in the squad, which is also evident in the recent ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. Keeping Ferguson fit will be of utmost importance for them to succeed in the IPL 2026 season and go past their previous best of being the runner-ups.

Record at Mullanpur

In IPL 2025, the Punjab Kings played 10 matches in Mullanpur and had a dreadful record of just 3 wins and 7 losses. They were only able to successfully chase targets on 1/4 occasions, which will be something they would like to work on in IPL 2026.

Punjab Kings' probable playing XI for IPL 2026

Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Shreyas Iyer (c), Nehal Wadhera, Marcus Stoinis/Cooper Connolly, Shashank Singh, Azmatullah Omarzai, Marco Jansen, Harpreet Brar, Arshdeep Singh, Lockie Ferguson. Impact player - Yuzvendra Chahal.
