PSL 2026 to have major overhaul [Source: @thePSLt20/X]
Ahead of the historic 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League in 2026, the league’s Chief Executive Officer Salman Naseer has indicated several key changes. Some of the most significant ones include the possible introduction of an auction system, direct player signings, and a potential increase in the player purse ahead of PSL 2026.
A few days ago, the PSL announced the addition of two new franchises, Sialkot and Hyderabad, expanding the competition beyond its earlier lineup of teams. With these new inclusions, Naseer explained that further consultations are now planned involving the two new franchises.
CEO explains plans for PSL 2026
Speaking to Geo News, Naseer said the discussions around the seven-team structure and league expansion will focus on whether the upcoming season should feature a draft system, an auction format, or a hybrid model combining both.
“Consultations were ongoing with the five existing franchises and we were waiting for the two new franchises to join us. After that, we wanted to take a consultative decision on whether we should move towards a draft, an auction, or a mix of both,” Naseer said.
“All these discussions have now taken place. Now we have to sit down with the two new franchises and make a final decision. After consultations, we will announce the direction we are heading in,” he added.
New auction model to be considered by PSL franchises
Naseer further shared that the PSL is currently more inclined towards continuing with the draft system rather than shifting fully to an auction. He noted that many franchises believe the draft format has helped maintain competitive balance over the years.
“The auction that took place showed how interesting it can be. Some existing franchises believe the player draft is more competitive. In the draft, categories are created and a certain number of players can be picked. This has maintained balance over the past 10 years and we have seen the results on the field,” he explained.
“When teams are balanced, the competition remains strong, often leading to last-over or even last-ball finishes. It’s a well-established model, so some franchises question why there should be a move away from it.”
Purse size for PSL 2026 up on the table
Another major point of discussion will be the proposed dates for the players’ draft. Player retention sizes and the possibility of direct signings are also under consideration for the mega franchise-based tournament.
“So far, the decision on whether there will be a draft or not has not been made. If it is to take place on January 30, we are still going to decide that and will consult with the Chairman on whether this date will be finalised.”
“As the league prepares for a potential structural reset, differing opinions have emerged. Some believe the current system sufficiently delivers quality players within reasonable price brackets. Some franchises also argue that good players come through anyway and fall within the same price range, so why change the model?” Naseer added.
Financial aspects form a key part of the ongoing talks as well, with discussions around player costs expected to play a central role. The current cap of USD 1.3 million per franchise is likely to be increased significantly by USD 1 million.
Key decisions for PSL 2026 to be taken soon
With the addition of two new teams, the PSL is gearing up for a major overhaul. Board members are expected to take carefully measured decisions, with several crucial factors at stake.
With the tournament scheduled to run from March 26 to May 3, the decision-makers have nearly two months at their disposal to implement either a complete or partial revamp, depending on the financial feasibility for each franchise.
