Indian cricket authorities and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed surprise at the shocking response from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) after fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was unexpectedly dropped from the Indian Premier League.
Eager to resolve the issue, Indian officials promptly suggested a compromise as per bdcrictime. BCCI offered reinstating Mustafizur Rahman in the league if Bangladesh consented to playing their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup games on Indian soil.
BCCI offered BCB to reinstate Mustafizur Rahman in IPL
As per the same report, the offer was swiftly declined, with the BCB emphasising their absolute refusal to compete in the World Cup in India, irrespective of any deals involving players.
Mustafizur, a key pacer from Bangladesh known for his lethality with the ball, was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders for a substantial 9.20 crore during the IPL 2026 mini-auction.
However, the BCCI soon directed KKR to release him without offering a detailed rationale for the decision.
The BCB then argued that if India couldn't ensure the security of a single Bangladeshi cricketer in the IPL, it raised serious doubts about the safety of the entire national team during a major international event like the T20 World Cup 2026.
A report from the Bangladeshi newspaper Kaler Kantho shed light on the BCB's reasoning behind rejecting India's subsequent overture. A high-ranking BCB director elaborated on the board's mindset in the matter.
“Accepting that offer would have been like going back to bat after declaring an innings. That’s why we rejected it,” the official was quoted as saying.
The growing tussle between BCB and BCCI after Mustafizur ban
Consequently, Bangladesh submitted an official appeal to the International Cricket Council to relocate their scheduled matches to co-host Sri Lanka, citing ongoing concerns that made travel to India untenable.
By the point India's proposal reached the BCB, the board had already solidified its stance publicly. Yet, the BCCI's difficulty in accepting this led to persistent efforts to overturn Mustafizur's exclusion,
Bangladesh authorities ban IPL broadcasting
In recent developments, the fallout has extended beyond the IPL and World Cup discussions. Bangladesh has imposed a ban on IPL broadcasts within its borders.
Meanwhile, the ICC has formally turned down the BCB's request for a venue change, insisting that the tournament's co-hosting arrangement between India and Sri Lanka remains intact.
Reports indicate that ICC officials are planning meetings with the BCB to address these security apprehensions, but no ultimatums have been issued, as clarified by Bangladeshi cricket administrators who dismissed such rumours as baseless.
