In a significant move, there are reports that the PCB is looking to remove Salman Ali Agha as the Pakistan captain in T20Is. Notably, the development has come after Pakistan’s defeat against England, which has put them on the brink of elimination from the T20 World Cup 2026.
According to a report from Revsportz, Salman Agha is walking on a tightrope, and it added that if Pakistan fail to reach the semi-finals, then Agha would be sacked from his role.
Shabad Khan To Replace Salman Ali Agha
The report added that the PCB has a name in mind and Shadab Khan will take over as Pakistan’s T20I captain. The star all-rounder is currently the deputy of the team and would be promoted as the team leader for the next World Cup cycle.
After the T20 World Cup 2026, Pakistan will tour Bangladesh for ODIs, and then the PSL will start. Therefore, PCB is expected to officially formalise the move after PSL.

“Look, after the World Cup, Pakistan will go to Bangladesh for a three-match ODI series, and then the Pakistan Super League (PSL) will start. Fan anger will die down by then. I think they will wait until the end of the PSL before taking a call,” said the source speaking to RevSportz.
How Has Salman Ali Agha Fared As Pakistan Captain?
Salman Ali Agha was named as Pakistan's T20I captain in 2025. He has led the team in 49 matches. He has emerged victorious in 30 matches. However, under his tenure, Pakistan lost thrice to India in Asia Cup 2025 and that too within in a month.
Talking about T20 World Cup 2026, then Pakistan are on the brink of elimination as they have just one point in two matches in Super 8. Agha also came under criticism during England match because of his bowler rotation.
Pakistan's trump card is Usman Tariq, but the right-arm spinner was brought into the attack in the 8th over and was removed from bowling after one over and that too he took a wicket in it. Further, Agha's decision to bring a pacer for the 20th over instead of a mystery spinner also got everyone talking.
How Can Pakistan Still Reach Semi-Final?
As mentioned above, Pakistan have only one match left against Sri Lanka, which they have to win at any cost. If they lose their final match, then they will be eliminated. Further, even if Pakistan beat the Island Nation, then the Men in Green will have to rely on other results to qualify for the next round.
For Pakistan to stay alive, they need Sri Lanka to beat New Zealand, which would make Pakistan vs New Zealand match a virtual quarter-final and the winner of that match will progress to the semi-final.
Therefore, Salman Agha still has the chance to retain his place as a captain in the team. Talking about the ongoing match, New Zealand have put 135/6 after 17.5 overs.
