In a significant development, the BCCI has fined Jammu and Kashmir captain Paras Dogra for headbutting a Karnataka fielder on Day 2 of the Ranji Trophy final. The board has penalised the right-handed batter 50% of his match fees for losing his temper on the field and engaging in a physical altercation.

The board is yet to officially issue a statement, but a report from Cricbuzz confirmed that the apex cricketing body of India has imposed 50% match fees penalty to the J&K captain.

Why Did Paras Dogra Hit Karnataka Fielder on Day 2 of the Ranji Trophy final

The incident occurred in the 101st over of the game when Dogra charged towards KV Aneesh, the substitute fielder, who was sledging him. The J&K skipper replied to the constant blabbering by hitting the fielder on his helmet with his own headgear.

It created an uproar as the rest of the Karnataka team came to Avneesh’s defence, and eventually, the umpires had to intervene and stop the matter. Notably, the action was a reaction to the constant frustration built through sledging.

There are reports that Avneesh made remarks regarding Dogra’s domestic history and even questioned his batting, which made the 41-year-old lose his cool on the field.

How Has Paras Dogra Fared In Domestic Cricket?

For the unversed, Paras Dogra is only the third Indian cricketer after Wasim Jaffer and Cheteshwar Pujara to score 10,000+ First-Class runs in domestic circuit. He started his career with Himachal Pradesh, then made a move to Pondicherry in 2018. Eventually, Dogra moved to Jammu and Kashmir in 2024 and has now led the team to their maiden Ranji Trophy final.

Dogra’s domestic success helped him earn contracts from IPL teams, but the right-handed batter failed to earn an India call-up. Talking about his ongoing season, Paras has 621 runs in 15 innings, averaging 44.36.

Further, he is leading by example in the Ranji Trophy final as Paras Dogra amassed 70 (166) to help his side put 527/6 on the board after the end of play on Day 2.

What Punishments did Paras Dogra Escape From BCCI?

According to the BCCI Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials, the following sanctions may be imposed if a player fights, punches, or kicks another player, official, or spectator:

Match Suspensions: A player may be suspended for 3 or more matches, or for a specific period of time.

Fines: Players can be fined a significant percentage of their match fee (up to 100%, depending on the severity).

Level 4 Offence Criteria: Fighting is categorised under Article 2.19 (Acts of Violence), which is the most severe level, often involving physical assault.

Disciplinary Action: The incident is referred to the BCCI Disciplinary Committee, which can impose further bans from the tournament or even central contracts.

Therefore, Paras Dogra is lucky to just have been fined match fees for his offence and not attract any ban which would have been imposed for the next season.
