Former Australia cricketer James Hopes has made a surprise coaching move just weeks after accepting one of the biggest roles in the Big Bash League. After beginning preparations for life with the Sydney Sixers, Hopes has now decided to step away before coaching a single match.

The former Australia international, James Hopes, has instead chosen an opportunity much closer to home, bringing an early end to what was expected to be a long-term project with one of the BBL's most successful franchises.

Hopes Joined Sixers Amid IPL 2026

Sydney Sixers appointed James Hopes as their new head coach on a two-year deal in early May, replacing Greg Shipperd despite the veteran coach leading the franchise to the BBL final in the 2025-26 season.

The appointment came while Hopes was serving as Punjab Kings' bowling coach during IPL 2026.

It marked his first full-time head coaching role after years of working as a bowling coach in franchise cricket, including stints in the IPL, BBL and Major League Cricket.

Speaking after his appointment, Hopes had said, "I'm incredibly honoured to join the Sydney Sixers, a club with a proud history and a strong identity built on consistency, competitiveness and connection with its fans. I'm excited to work with a talented playing group and contribute to the next phase of the Sixers' success in the BBL."

The Sixers were equally confident about their new coach, with general manager Rachael Haynes describing him as an outstanding fit because of his coaching experience and player development skills. However, all turned into dust quite soon.

James Hopes Switches BBL Franchises

Less than two months after accepting the Sixers role, Hopes has stepped down to become the head coach of the Brisbane Heat and Queensland Bulls on a three-year contract.

He is currently working with Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket and will officially begin his new role with Queensland next month.

The move takes Hopes back to familiar surroundings. He captained both Queensland and the Brisbane Heat during his playing career, leading Queensland to the Sheffield Shield title in 2012 and successive one-day trophies in 2012-13 and 2013-14.

He was also a foundation player and the inaugural captain of the Brisbane Heat before moving into coaching following his retirement in 2016.

Why Did James Hopes Leave Sydney Sixers?

Hopes admitted the decision was difficult but said the opportunity to return to Queensland with his family was impossible to ignore.

"I wrestled with this decision as I was, and still am, very appreciative of being offered the Sixers role earlier this year. However, to have the opportunity to take on the head coaching program with Queensland and live in Brisbane again was too good to miss.

"I have been in and out of Queensland Cricket since I was 14 and along the way was privileged to play for the Bulls and the Heat. So, to be a part of that again is something very special to me and my family," James Hopes shared.

Sydney Sixers accepted the decision and wished Hopes well. "While the Club is disappointed by this decision, we understand the significance of this opportunity for him and his family, and we wish him all the very best.

"The Sydney Sixers were impressed by the calibre of coaches who applied for the role, and we look forward to progressing with the appointment of our new BBL Head Coach."

What's Next For Hopes?

Hopes will complete his ongoing coaching commitments with Washington Freedom before taking charge of Queensland and the Brisbane Heat ahead of the new Australian domestic season.

His return gives Queensland one of the country's most experienced coaches, with years of franchise cricket knowledge gained through roles with Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Hobart Hurricanes and Tasmania.

Meanwhile, Sydney Sixers have begun the search for another head coach after unexpectedly losing their first-choice appointment before the start of the 2026-27 Big Bash League season.
