Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi had been in the headlines for his unusual statements during the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2026. Meanwhile, he recently made shocking claims about his experience of leading Pakistan in front of the Indian crowd.
Shahid Afridi recalled the memories of the 2011 ODI World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Notably, it was the last time India and Pakistan had faced each other in a World Cup knockout game.
Shahid Afridi reveals what Indian crowd did to Pakistan players
During a show on Samaa TV, Shahid Afridi spoke about the pressure Pakistan players felt after the Indian crowd loudly cheered for the hosts. He also revealed the after-response of the other Pakistani players to the massive roar of the Indian crowd.
“When we were playing semi-final against India in Chandigarh, we had a brilliant start of 90 runs by Kamran Akmal and Mohammad Hafeez. I was also sitting relaxed as a captain that we will win for sure. But just after our first wicket was dismissed, the way the Indian crowd roared and lifted their players, India started giving a fightback in the game,” Afridi said.

“Our players were even hesitating to walk in to bat due to the noise of the fans. Following Hafeez’s dismissal, they (Indian players) played aggressive cricket on every ball. So, it was the crowd's noise that threw us under pressure,” he added later.
These remarks drew a backlash for Afridi from the cricket fans for being factually incorrect while talking about the game. Fans were quite quick to troll Afridi with the exact scorecard of the game he was talking about.
The former Pakistan skipper said that they had a start of 90 runs for the first wicket. But in reality, the Men in Green had lost two wickets for just 70 runs while chasing the target.
The World Cup 2011 Semi-Final: When India humiliated Pakistan at mega stage
In the second semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2011, the arch-rivals, India and Pakistan, locked horns in Mohali. The then hosts’ skipper, MS Dhoni, won the toss and decided to bat first. India’s opening pair of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar stitched a fiery opening partnership of 48 runs in just 5.5 overs.
Sehwag scored 38 runs off just 25 balls, with nine fours, followed by Tendulkar’s 85 runs off 115 balls, with 11 fours. Later in the innings, MS Dhoni’s 25-run knock and Suresh Raina’s unbeaten 39-ball 36 helped India survive amidst Wahab Riaz’s five-wicket haul (5/46).
Eventually, India posted a decent total of 260 runs for the loss of nine wickets in the allotted 50 overs. While chasing the target, Pakistan had a bit of a slow start of 44 runs in nine overs, which faced a big blow with Kamran Akmal’s dismissal off Zaheer Khan.
Furthermore, Mohammad Hafeez (43), Misbah-ul-Haq (56), and Asad Shafique (30) were the only batters to show some resistance against Indian bowling during the run chase. The rest of Pakistan's batting line-up crumbled against the Indian bowlers.
Eventually, India bundled out Pakistan at the score of 231 runs in 49.5 overs and won the game by 29 runs. With this win, MS Dhoni’s men secured a spot in the tournament’s final, where they defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets to lift the World Cup title after 28 years.
Afridi’s claims burst the hoax of PCB’s self-staged bravado
Meanwhile, Shahid Afridi’s on-air admission of Pakistan players getting nervous in front of the Indian crowd also has an interesting side. The former captain’s remarks have also exposed the false bravado that was self-staged by PCB and Mohsin Naqvi just a few days back, before and during the T20 World Cup 2026.
So, Shahid Afridi knowingly or unknowingly pulled the curtains off Pakistan’s lie. The same fake narrative they told their people about their so-called win in the negotiations with ICC regarding the T20 World Cup 2026 game against India. On the other hand, the reality was completely contrary to their claims.
