Not even 48 hours have passed since the T20 World Cup 2026 final between India and New Zealand, and the preparation for the upcoming edition of the tournament has already begun. With Australia and New Zealand set to co-host the tournament, the race to host the grand final has already started.
Before stepping into the T20 World Cup 2028, a war between the iconic MCG and the Adelaide Oval has started to host the final match of the tournament. As per the reports, the South Australian government is aiming to host the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final at Adelaide Oval.
MCG or Adelaide Oval: who will host the T20 World Cup 2028 final
After a month-long unreal T20 thrills have just settled down, Team India lifted their third T20 World Cup trophy after beating New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2026 final. As the world just saw the newest T20I champion, the anticipation has already begun for the upcoming edition.
As New Zealand and Australia are hosting the T20 World Cup 2028 jointly, fans are already thrilled to witness some iconic battle on challenging conditions. As the tournament is still far away, two iconic stadiums are found in each other in the race to host the final match of the iconic tournament.

Over the years, the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground has organised crucial matches, but now, the Adelaide Oval has entered the race as its competitor. Reports suggest that the South Australian government is keen to host the Men’s T20 World Cup 2028 at the Adelaide Oval.
Since long time, whenever Australia hosted any ICC events, the prestigious MCG usually staged the biggest matches, as fans enjoyed some iconic matches. Now, if Adelaide Oval gets the nod to host the T20 World Cup 2028 final, the cricket world will see a different kind of challenge on the field.
Adelaide’s weather could outplay MCG
Conditions in Australia are always challenging, but major tournaments depend on several factors beyond just playing conditions. As the T20 World Cup 2028 is scheduled to take place in October-November of that year, the Australian weather becomes a massive challenge for the touring countries.
During that time, rainfall affects the activities, as the cricket world has already seen it before during the T20 World Cup 2022. As Australia hosted that edition of the tournament, rain affected the games at the MCG. After the Super 12 clash between Afghanistan and Ireland was washed out, the clash between England and Australia faced a similar fate.
At this point, Adelaide Oval is slightly ahead of the MCG in the race. During that time of the year, the venue usually expects less rainfall, which could reduce interruptions during scheduled matches. As the final clash of any tournament is the most crucial one, this factor is set to play an important role in venue selection.
Has the Adelaide Oval hosted any major matches?
Whenever Australia hosted any ICC events, the Melbourne Cricket Ground remained a go-to choice to host the finals. In that race, Adelaide Oval still trails behind, as it has yet to host an ICC tournament final. It may not have hosted any final match, but the quarter-final match of the 2015 ODI World Cup was played at the venue.
The Adelaide Oval also hosted the thrilling semifinal match between India and England in the T20 World Cup 2022. Adding to that, the iconic venue has undergone major developments and is now set to host big matches.
However, with Australia and New Zealand set to co-host the tournament, some major venues from both nations might miss out on key games. As the T20 World Cup 2028 is still sometimes away, the venues are yet to be finalized.
