In an important update, India’s proposed white-ball tour to Bangladesh is likely to go ahead amid diplomatic tensions, but the final approval depends on the governments of both countries, not just the cricket boards.
The tour was supposed to take place in 2025 but was postponed to 2026 after diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh were severed due to political tensions.
The issue further escalated when Bangladesh refused to travel to India for the T20 World Cup 2026, citing security reasons, which eventually led to their ouster from the tournament.
India tour of Bangladesh still uncertain
Regardless, the BCCI and BCB are willing to stage the white-ball series this year to improve the relations between the two countries. However, according to RevSportz, the decision is no longer in the boards’ hands.
Apparently, India’s tour of Bangladesh 2026 can only go ahead if the Indian government gives clearance. Discussions are reportedly taking place at the highest level, and both sides are optimistic of a positive outcome.
If approval is granted, India could tour Bangladesh for a short white-ball series in September 2026. Not only that, but resumption of cricket could also help in normalising political ties between India and Bangladesh.
Hence, the BCB are desperate to organise this tour. It will not only improve cross-border relations but also generate great revenue, which will result in growth of Bangladesh cricket.

Will Sheikh Hasina’s press conference create a roadblock?
Recently, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is living in India, held a press conference in New Delhi. She had to flee the country after violent protests in 2025 and sought shelter in India.
But the current Bangladesh government objected strongly to the event, arguing it could affect diplomatic relations. However, the RevSportz report says the event was organised by a private media entity, not by the government, meaning there is no liability on PM Narendra Modi.
Hence, the Sheikh Hasina controversy is unlikely to derail the India tour of Bangladesh 2026. It was a political event where the Indian government had no role to play.
Tamim Iqbal’s role in this fiasco
Interestingly, after the T20 World Cup 2026 fallout, BCB initiated a major overhaul in leadership with former cricketer Tamim Iqbal taking over as president. Since then, he has been actively working on improving ties with India and the BCCI.
According to reports, he met members of the Bangladesh government and appealed to them to resume talks with the Narendra Modi government regarding the white-ball tour.
Tamim Iqbal is reportedly hopeful that his efforts won’t go to waste and even assured India of foolproof security and world-class hospitality during their time in Bangladesh.
But for now, the ball remains in the Narendra Modi government’s court. Unless they feel the security measures are satisfactory, this tour won’t go ahead.
