In an enthralling TNPL 2026 contest between Trichy Grand Cholas and Madurai Panthers, CSK’s Gurjapneet Singh emerged as the hero by recreating the legendary MS Dhoni’s finishing skills.

The Cholas had posted 173 runs on the board in the first innings, courtesy of an expensive spell by Gurjapneet as he conceded 42 runs in his four-over quota while picking just a single wicket. However, primarily known for his bowling skills, Gurjapneet redeemed himself in the second innings and played a pivotal role in Siechem Madurai Panthers' thrilling two-wicket win.

In the second innings, Gurjapneet Singh saved the day for Madurai Panthers. He walked into bat at number 10 when the Panthers were struggling at 132/8 at the end of 17 overs.

Singh started well to hit Anthony Dhas for 15 runs in the 18th over. He went on to smash 3 fours and a six to maintain a strike rate of over 200. Gurjapneet didn’t panic and calmly approached the tricky chase with sheer belief.

He ended up scoring 21 runs from just 9 balls while Saravanan also contributed with 28 off 13 balls to help Madurai Panthers chase down the total with 2 balls to spare. 

That marked the Panthers’ first victory of the TNPL 2026 season, and Gurjapneet Singh proved why CSK chose to trust him in the IPL.

Gurjapneet took a leaf out of MS Dhoni's school of finishing in TNPL 2026

Gurjapneet Singh has been associated with CSK since 2024. He has worked closely with the talismanic MS Dhoni, who is a world-class finisher. It’s no secret that Dhoni mentors CSK youngsters for their holistic development as cricketers. 

So, needless to say, Singh must have also taken a class or two from Dhoni’s school of finishing and those skills were put on display during the TNPL. He stayed calm despite scoreboard pressure and didn’t play any rash shots.

Such skills are rare for someone who is predominantly a fast bowler. But after his time with CSK, Gurjapneet Singh has learned that sensible hitting in just a few balls can truly turn the tables for his team.

Meanwhile, the recent heroics in TNPL 2026 are also important for Gurjapneet Singh as the IPL retention deadline is just a few months away. The left-arm pacer was bought by CSK during the IPL 2025 mega auction, but he failed to make his debut that year.

Regardless, CSK trusted him by retaining him in IPL 2026. This time, he finally made his debut and picked 4 wickets in 8 games with an economy of 9.25. The franchise didn't do well in the season, and Gurjapneet’s performance was definitely not a positive for them.

So, ahead of IPL 2027, CSK will definitely be keeping an eye on Gurjapneet Singh. He is a local player who is familiar with conditions and develops into a serious threat if groomed well. And these notable performances in TNPL 2026 will only add to his value.
