Nahid Rana and Josh Inglis' on-field altercation was the major highlight from the first ODI between Bangladesh and Australia at Mirpur on Tuesday.

In the first game of the three-match series, Bangladesh truly punched above their weight by registering their first win in the format over the reigning World Champions in 21 years.

With the bat, Mosaddek Hossain scored his highest score of 86*, along with Najmul Hossain Shanto and Tanzid Hasan who scored respective fifties, as Bangladesh posted a par total of 284/8.

Nahid Rana and Mustafizur Rahman were enough for the inexperienced Aussie side, who were wrapped up for 191/9 as the hosts won by 86 runs on the DLS method.

ICC punishes Nahid Rana after BAN vs AUS 1st ODI

During the second innings of the BAN vs AUS 1st ODI, Nahid Rana and Josh Inglis had an episode in the 11th over, when the Bangladesh seamer dismissed the Australian stand-in captain.

Rana banged a back of a length delivery in the channel, which moved away a tad latterally. Inglis, wanting to dab it down, nicked it behind to the keeper. After the dismissal, the quick showed his aggression towards the batter, prompting a response from the Australian.

As a result, the ICC has slammed the 23-year-old with one demerit point for his actions.

"Nahid (Rana) was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to 'using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match,'" the ICC said in a press release.

Nahid Rana not a 'first-time offender'

After the altercation with Josh Inglis, Nahid Rana received backing from his teammate, Mosaddek Hossain, who indirectly blamed Australia for the spat. However, the ICC's Match Referee Prakash Bhatt thinks otherwise.

"Nahid admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Prakash Bhatt of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing," it added.

It is understood that the ICC has punished Nahid Rana for the second time. Last year in November, during a Test match against Ireland at Sylhet, he was handed a demerit point and fined 25% of the match fee when he dangerously threw the ball at Cade Carmichael's pads.

It is worth noting that if a player reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points, which get the player banned.

Nahid Rana's rise from the ashes

Nahid Rana has seen an exponential rise in international cricket in recent years. Known for bowling hard lengths at terrorising pace, he polished himself in the recently concluded PSL 2026, featuring for the eventual winners Peshawar Zalmi.

Currently, he is playing mainly in Test and ODI formats, but he has been impressive in the shortest format as well. Although he has played just one T20I, Rana has played 35 T20s, taking 36 wickets at an economy rate of 7.80.

Nevertheless, the right-arm speedster returned with 4 for 41 in the BAN vs AUS 1st ODI. Moreover, he impressed Alex Carey with his spell, who offered him a BBL contract for the Adelaide Strikers

The second ODI between Bangladesh and Australia will be played at Mirpur on Thursday (June 11).
