Mohammad Amir on calling Abhishek Sharma a slogger [Source: AFP]
Mohammad Amir infamously termed Abhishek Sharma a slogger earlier in 2026, when the left-handed batter found it difficult to get going during the T20 World Cup. The former Pakistan pacer kept doubling down on his statement, despite India eventually lifting the title.
Months later, Amir has issued a clarification and reasoning behind his comments on the Indian opener, visibly taking a step back. The 34-year-old felt his statements were missed in translation.
Mohammad Amir explains his stance on Abhishek Sharma
About 8 to 9 months have passed since Amir took to Pakistani national television and openly called Abhishek Sharma a slogger who can't hit when there is help for the bowlers in the pitch. Since then, Abhishek has also reclaimed his world number 1 spot in the ICC T20I batting rankings and regained his form.
As the southpaw finds his rhythm back, Amir sort of backtracked and said the translation into English feels harsh, and he did not mean it that way.
"English me usko slogging kehte hai, lekin Urdu me agar aap usko dekho to usko kehte hai chalana. Wo [Abhishek] bohot chalata hai, rukta to hai nahi. Mere kehne ka matlab yahi tha ki wo har ball chalata hai," Amir told Mr Cricket UAE.
His statement roughly translates to "It is called [reckless] slogging in English, but in Urdu, what I meant to say was that he [Abhishek] attacks every ball; he does not stop," implying that he did not want to disrespect the batter.

Abhishek's return to form post World Cup
The Indian opening batter had a torrid T20 World Cup at home. While he was consistently backed by the management, he could not make a substantial contribution till the blistering 52 off 21 to set India up for 255 runs in 20 overs.
However, since the end of the competition, only Karanbir Singh from Austria has scored more T20I runs, with 895 runs in 24 innings at 184.91. Abhishek, who was written off by many, has managed to bounce back and score 830 runs in 26 innings at a strike rate of 207.50. He has two centuries and four fifties in this period.
Thanks to this return to form, the left-hander has dethroned teammate Ishan Kishan in the T20I rankings at the top.
