James Anderson to continue County career [Source: AFP]
In a significant twist amid retirement rumors, James Anderson could be seen back on the field for another County Championship season. After spending 25 years at Lancashire, Anderson's contract was not extended for another season earlier in October.
The 44-year-old retired from international cricket in 2024, but in both the subsequent seasons, he turned up for his boyhood club and also captained them in County Championship's 2nd division. Just when it looked like Anderson was finally set to hang his boots, there seems to be another chapter left in his book.
James Anderson to continue County Championship career
Following the mutual announcement of the England great leaving Lancashire, the player expressed his disappointment over the manner in which he was informed about the decision to not renew his contract. The move from the club's new hierarchy also received a widespread criticism.
BBC also reported that there is still interest among different clubs to approach him and negotiate deals for the next season. Daily Mail Sport's Richard Gibson, on Thursday afternoon has further reported on the topic, revealing as many as 12 County Clubs, across both divisions have approached Anderson for 2027.
If any deal goes through, it will be the first time in Anderson's long career that he will represent a new club at the domestic level.
Anderson ends Lancashire journey on a high
Despite age, the opening bowler was one of the stars of the season in Division Two of the Championship. At 44, he ended the season with 50 scalps in 11 matches, averaging only 17.68 — no other bowler picked more wickets at a better average. He was only 10 wickets behind the leading wicket-taker Matthew Potts.
One of the reasons why Anderson's contract is not being extended is that Lancashire finished 7th on the Division Two table. He was their captain and they not only missed the promotion, but also did not compete for it.
If he continues to play for another season, the 44-year-old will have a shot at completing 1200 First Class wickets. Currently, he has 1193 wickets in 315 matches and also completed 62,000 balls in the past seasons.
