Kevin Pietersen Trolls SA vs ENG series [Source: AFP]
South Africa are set to host England in a three-game Test series in December this year. However, the tour has hit a crisis, and Kevin Pietersen took a sly yet hard dig at it on social media.
The England tour of South Africa will consist of three Tests and as many ODIs. However, despite two high-profile teams participating, the series is apparently struggling to find takers.
Kevin Pietersen offers a solution to the SA vs ENG series crisis
According to reports, Cricket South Africa is struggling to find a UK broadcaster for England’s 2026-27 tour. Traditionally, Sky Sports showed these matches for decades. But they’ve refused to renew the deal.
Another option, TNT Sports, is interested but currently unable to commit financially due to business uncertainty. So right now, there’s a real possibility that a major England Test series might not even be broadcast in the UK.
Reacting to this, former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen jokingly said, “My YouTube channel can stream it.”
That sounds light-hearted, but it actually sheds light on a serious issue. He’s mocking how big broadcasters are walking away, suggesting that even a YouTube stream feels like a realistic alternative.

Is Test cricket losing its charm?
The reason the broadcast crisis may be happening is because of the declining value of bilateral cricket. Non-ICC series don’t attract massive bids anymore, and even premium tours aren’t guaranteed TV deals.
There is also competition from other sports. Sky Sports seems to be prioritising football and other games during Christmas. Cricket is no longer the default premium winter content.
Also, the rise of T20 leagues is an issue. Since leagues like the IPL and The Hundred are getting a lot of attention, traditional Test series are losing commercial pull.
England cricket's recent downfall is also a culprit
An important factor behind the declining viewership of cricket in the UK is England’s poor form across formats. They lost the Ashes to Australia in a one-sided rivalry where England didn’t show any fight whatsoever.
Against India, England drew the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy despite being in a winning position. Even during the T20 World Cup 2026, the team lost the semi-final to India and bowed out.
Hence, the lower excitement of fans is contributing to reduced casual viewership, and hence broadcasters hesitate to invest in uncertain returns.
Ultimately, this situation suggests international cricket is struggling to adapt to a rapidly changing media and entertainment ecosystem.
If boards cannot secure lucrative broadcast deals in key markets like the UK, it raises serious questions about the long-term sustainability and relevance of traditional formats, pushing the game toward rethinking how it is packaged, marketed, and delivered to modern audiences.
