England produced a strong all-round performance to defeat India by four wickets in the 2nd ODI at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on July 16. Chasing 234, England reached the target with a significant contribution from Joe Root.
The star player made 99 runs from 133 balls, guiding the innings under pressure after the hosts lost early wickets.
Although he missed out on a century by just one run, Root made it clear that the victory was far more important than any personal milestone. While Indian captain Shubman Gill shared a different opinion on this matter.
Joe Root Puts Team Before Personal Milestone
Walking in after Ben Duckett was dismissed off the very first ball of the innings, Joe Root handled the difficult situation with patience and control.
England slipped to 125/5 during the chase, but Root remained composed and built useful partnerships with Sam Curran, Will Jacks and Gus Atkinson.
After the game, Root revealed that he had no interest in chasing personal records when the result was still in the balance.
Joe Root said, "I told Atkinson to just get it done. If they want to set fields like that and give us a chance to win the game, then let's take it. It's all about winning and there's no better feeling in cricket than being there at the end you chase something down".
It is important to mention that Root also entered the record books by becoming the first England batter to finish an ODI innings unbeaten on 99.

Shubman Gill Shares Different View On Joe Root's Innings
The final moments of the chase became a talking point after England completed the win with Root stranded on 99 not out.
With England needing five runs to win, Gus Atkinson took a single off the last ball of the 44th over, leaving Root one run away from a century.
In the following over, Atkinson struck a boundary to seal the victory before Root had another chance to face a delivery.
After the match, India captain Shubman Gill admitted he would have handled the situation differently.
"I wouldn’t have taken that single in the second last over," Shubman Gill said while speaking about the closing stages of the chase.
Why Root’s Match-Winning Knock Stood Out?
While the scorecard will show Joe Root finishing on 99 not out, the innings was about much more than missing a century.
England's chase began in the worst possible way as Jasprit Bumrah removed Duckett with the opening delivery. Jacob Bethell and Harry Brook also departed early, leaving the hosts under pressure.
Root recognised the situation perfectly, and instead of attacking recklessly, he focused on rotating the strike, punishing loose deliveries and building partnerships.
So the way Joe Root handled the situation clearly showcases why his innings was so important for England.
With the series now level at 1-1, all focus will be on India's performance in the 3rd ODI. The final match of the India tour of England 2026 will be played on July 19 at Lord's.
