Canada's search for a new men's head coach has begun after its current head coach exited the role. The departure brought an unexpectedly short second chapter to the coach, Monty Desai’s, with the national team.
The former coach returned to the Canadian setup in May, but his latest stint has now come to an end with the side still fighting to keep their ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027 qualification hopes alive.
Monty Desai's Second Canada Stint Ends Almost As Quickly As It Began
Desai's exit comes at a particularly important stage for Canada. With only four matches remaining in their ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 campaign, Canada is six points away from the top four and faces the possibility of dropping into the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off.
The situation leaves Canada with little room for error, while the hunt for Desai's replacement will also be a concern they would like to address.
Desai returned to Canada in May for his second spell in charge, taking responsibility for the team during two League 2 tri-series.
One of those campaigns was played on home soil, while the other took place in Scotland. However, despite having a familiar face back in the coaching setup, Canada have struggled to put themselves in a strong position in the League 2 table.
With four games still remaining, the six-point gap to the top four means every upcoming result could have a major impact on their route towards the World Cup 2027.

Why Did Desai Leave Canada Stint?
Desai, meanwhile, described his departure as the end of a brief but valuable experience while not particularly sharing any reason for the immediate exit.
"A short chapter, but a meaningful one," Desai said in a statement on social media. Every environment leaves you with learnings. This experience further strengthened my belief that sustainable performance is built through time, trust, preparation, strong relationships and collective ownership."
He also thanked the players and staff who were part of his latest journey with Canada.
"Thank you to the players, support staff and everyone who shared this journey. I leave with gratitude for the relationships built, the lessons learned and the opportunity to contribute," Desai shared.
Canada Now Has Four Matches To Save Their World Cup Route
Desai's departure could hardly have come at a more delicate point for Canada. The team are currently six points outside the top four positions in League 2, meaning the direct road towards the World Cup Qualifier is becoming increasingly difficult.
Instead, Canada are staring at the possibility of having to take the longer route through the Qualifier Play-off.
The play-off will serve as a repechage event, with four places in the World Cup Qualifier at stake. That makes Canada's remaining four League 2 matches extremely important. A strong finish could still change the picture, but dropped points would make the team's path considerably harder.
The coaching change also means that whoever takes over will have very little time to make significant changes.
Desai And His Coaching Stints With Canada And Others
Although Desai's latest stint with Canada lasted only a few months, his connection with the team goes much further back.
The coach first worked with Canada in 2019 during their World Cricket League 2 campaign in Namibia. His return in 2026 therefore represented a reunion rather than an entirely new appointment.
Desai also brings more than two decades of coaching experience to the table. His coaching career has included work with the United Arab Emirates, Afghanistan and Nepal, giving him experience across several different cricketing environments.
His time with Nepal was particularly notable. Desai was part of the coaching setup during Nepal's remarkable run in Cricket World Cup League 2 and was also involved with the team during their 2024 T20 World Cup campaign in the USA and West Indies.
That experience made his return to Canada an intriguing appointment, especially with the country trying to build towards another World Cup appearance. Nevertheless, the international cricket team would now like to rebuild on their hopes as they search for the next leader.
