In a surprising move, bowling all-rounder Mitchell Santner is all set to return to the cricket field weeks after enduring a major injury during the IPL 2026 season. He was playing for the Mumbai Indians when the setback happened.

While fielding for MI in a match against CSK, Santner banged his shoulder onto the ground and had to leave the field immediately. It was later revealed that Mitchell had a Grade three ACL injury, which will require at least a month to heal.

Mitchell Santner returns to England Test series

However, in an unexpected development, New Zealand announced that Mitchell Santner will be a part of the team’s squad for the upcoming three-game Test series against England.

Interestingly, the all-rounder was initially ruled out of the first Test against England at Lord's as the Kiwis hoped he might be fit for the second or third Test instead.

However, he is arriving in London earlier than expected, which means he could be considered for selection in the series opener. This is a big boost for New Zealand, as Santner will add much-needed balance to the squad.

Mitchell Santner is a left-arm spin option who can control the ball better if conditions become dry later in the match. At Lord's, seam bowlers usually dominate, but teams often like having a spinner who can hold an end and contribute with the bat.

Dean Foxcroft asked to return home

That being said, to make space for Mitchell Santner in the New Zealand Test squad, the board asked Dean Foxcroft to return home. Foxcroft made his Test debut against Ireland this year, but he will have to wait for his chances.

Still, Santner's selection is not guaranteed. New Zealand have just defeated Ireland convincingly, and players such as Nathan Smith and Blair Tickner strengthened their cases during that match.

Santner's fitness will be assessed first. Even if fully fit, New Zealand's selectors still need to decide whether conditions at Lord's warrant an extra spinner or an additional seamer.

England under pressure at home

Meanwhile, this 3-game Test series is significant for England as they are under pressure after a disappointing Ashes campaign in Australia where they lost 1-4. Before Ashes, England also fumbled a series win against India by settling for a 2-2 draw.

Naturally, former New Zealand captain and current England coach Brendon McCullum is facing scrutiny, making the opening Test particularly important for both teams to get momentum.

Also, captain Ben Stokes is returning after a serious facial injury that put him off for a long while. Hence, his form will also be under the scanner. This series is a part of the ongoing WTC cycle. Hence, England and New Zealand would aim to make the most out of it.
