In a major development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to take a final decision regarding Suryakumar Yadav’s future as India’s T20I captain.

Even though he guided India to a T20 World Cup title earlier this year, recent reports suggest that the team management is evaluating other leadership options.

Notably, the BCCI appears to be preparing a succession plan as part of its long-term strategy. Interestingly, Suryakumar Yadav’s name was not included in the 30-member preliminary list submitted to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for the upcoming Asian Games, which will take place in Aichi-Nagoya from September 19 to October 4.

Poor Form Raises Questions Over Suryakumar Yadav’s Leadership Role

Notably, Suryakumar Yadav's prolonged struggles with the bat have raised questions about his future as India's captain in the shortest format. During the T20 World Cup 2026, he scored 242 runs in nine innings, with 84 runs coming against the USA.

Notably, the star batter endured a disappointing IPL 2026 season, managing only 270 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 147.54. Furthermore, Mumbai Indians failed to secure a playoff spot, adding to the scrutiny surrounding his recent performances.

According to TOI, the selectors are likely to meet next week before India's one-off Test against Afghanistan.

During the meeting, they will pick the T20I and ODI squads for the tours of Ireland and England. They might also finalise the Asian Games squad and select the India 'A' team for a tour of Sri Lanka.

Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson And Axar Patel Emerge As Top Contenders

It is important to note that Suryakumar Yadav's future is expected to be one of the main topics during the discussions. Reports suggest that the selectors are looking at multiple captaincy candidates before making a final call.

"The selectors are looking at possible captaincy options before taking a call on Surya. While Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson appear to be contenders, vice-captain Axar Patel's name has also been floated to do the job before the selectors zero down on a clear successor.

It will also be seen if Surya will be given another tour to rediscover his touch as a player. The next selection meeting will make things clear," a BCCI source told TOI.

Asian Games 2026 Could Play A Key Role In Leadership Transition

Meanwhile, the national selectors are expected to finalise a 15-member squad by the second week of June. Reports indicate that the selectors had already decided in January to explore captaincy options during the Asian Games.

In addition, the BCCI will consult the government before making a final decision on the squad for the event.

The source revealed: "It was decided in Jan that Surya will not be part of the Asian Games. The focus is on ODI World Cup preparations. There are a few players in the long list who play the ODI format too. The govt will prefer if the BCCI sends a full-strength team to the Asian Games. A call on the Asian Games teams will be taken after consulting the govt."

Meanwhile, teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has earned a place in the 30-member list of probables for the Asian Games. As the selection meeting approaches, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, and Axar Patel have emerged as the leading candidates to succeed Suryakumar Yadav as India's next T20I captain.
