India and New Zealand locked horns in the second match of the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand. The match is being played at the Niranjan Shah Cricket Stadium, Rajkot, Gujarat on Wednesday, January 14.

At the toss, New Zealand captain Micheal Bracewell had the final say. Bracewell won the toss and decided to field first, showing confidence in his bowling unit.

Big changes in playing XIs

Notably, India have made one change to their playing XI for the second ODI, with Nitish Kumar Reddy replacing the injured Washington Sundar.

Meanwhile, New Zealand have also made one change: Jayden Lennox makes his debut, replacing Adithya Ashok.

Before the second ODI, India suffered a major setback when Washington Sundar picked up a rib injury during the opening ODI in Vadodara, ruling him out of the remaining matches of the series. As a result, the team management decided to bring in young batter Ayush Badoni as cover. In the first ODI, Sundar bowled five overs, conceding 27 runs.

Later, during New Zealand’s innings, he walked off the field and did not return for fielding duties. Despite visible discomfort, he came out to bat at number eight, showing great commitment and contributing to India’s four-wicket victory.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI: Captains Thoughts

Michael Bracewell (New Zealand Captain): "We are going to have a bowl first. Yeah, looks like a good surface. Hopefully, the dew comes in later on and it's good to bat on later in the evening.

Yeah, we fought right till the end. Perhaps gave ourselves a chance to win with late wickets.

Shubman Gill (India Captain): "We would've batted first honestly. There wasn't much dew in the last few days. So, we would've wanted to bat first. I have spoken with a few players and they said that the wicket will get a little slower as the match progresses.

(On his own batting) I was feeling very confident when I was there in the middle. I was very happy to chip in with some runs for my team. Hopefully it's going to be a big one today.

India vs New Zealand: What happened in 1st ODI

India entered the series opener with strong intent and walked away with a four-wicket win. Kiwis got off to a solid start after winning the toss and choosing to bat. Openers Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls played confident knocks, scoring 56 and 62 runs respectively. Their century partnership gave the visitors early control of the match.

Soon after, Indian bowlers tightened the grip with disciplined spells, slowing down the scoring rate. While chasing the target, Virat Kohli delivered a classy performance, scoring 93 runs off 91 balls. Notably, his innings guided India close to the finish line before he was dismissed in the 42nd over.

New Zealand aim for a comeback

After losing the first ODI, New Zealand will aim to bounce back strongly in the remaining matches. On the other hand, India will hope to continue their winning momentum and seal the series with consistent performances across departments.
