The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has confirmed the entire schedule of Afghanistan’s upcoming ‘home’ T20I series against Team India. It is worth noting that the matches will be hosted by India, a team that is still designated as ‘away team’ for the series.

The two Asian sides also took on each other a couple of months ago for a one-off Test and a three-match ODI series. However, unlike the upcoming T20I series, the Indian cricket team was the designated hosts for hosting all four matches in the country.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) will hold the official hosting rights of Afghanistan’s upcoming T20I series against India. The series will be played in September next month.

It is worth noting that even though the ACB are the designated hosts for the series, the entire three-match rubber will be played in India. On August 11, the ACB confirmed the entire schedule of the three-match T20I series, set to be played between September 13 and September 17.

All three matches will be played at the iconic Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Here is an entire schedule of Afghanistan’s ‘home’ T20I series against India, the ‘away team’.

Afghanistan vs India T20I series schedule:

  1. Afghanistan vs India 1st T20I - September 13, Delhi
  2. Afghanistan vs India 2nd T20I - September 15, Delhi
  3. Afghanistan vs India 3rd T20I - September 17, Delhi

Why is Afghanistan ‘hosting’ the series despite matches played in India?

The upcoming three-match T20I series between Afghanistan and India marks a historic one, considering it marks a rare occasion for the Indian cricket team to be playing in front of their home crowd as an ‘away side’.

The ACB holds the hosting rights of the series considering India is one of Afghanistan’s designated home venues, alongside UAE. Moreover, the Afghanistan cricket team has already played many ‘home’ fixtures in India, which included a white-ball series against Ireland back in 2017 and an all-format series against West Indies in late 2019.

Moreover, Afghanistan also travelled to India a couple of months ago to play a Test and three ODIs against India. However, unlike the upcoming series, the Test and ODIs had India starting out as the rightful series hosts.

Afghanistan’s ‘home’ series in India dashes India’s Bangladesh tour

Afghanistan’s upcoming ‘home’ series against India also pretty much dashed all hopes of Team India travelling to Bangladesh.

With Afghanistan slated to host India between September 13 and 17 next month, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had earmarked September 1 to September 13 for six white-ball home fixtures against the visiting ‘Men in Blue’.

Since India and the BCCI are already caught in a geopolitical crossfire with Bangladesh, the overlapping Afghanistan T20I series has further dented Bangladesh’s hopes of hosting the Indian cricket team for a bilateral series in September.

The proposed Bangladesh vs India white-ball series was being actively pushed by the BCB, which remained hopeful of convincing the BCCI to send the Indian team to Bangladesh despite receiving little to no encouragement from the Indian board.
