Jasprit Bumrah may be India’s best bowler across formats, but he has been an injury-prone pacer, and that has hampered Team India on a regular basis. He was expected to play a crucial role in India’s away series against the Sri Lankan team, but the pacer failed to recover from an injury and was ruled out of the tour.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup in sight, Team India needs their best pacer, Bumrah, to be one hundred percent fit, but if the latest report is to be believed, then Bumrah might not play for India in the coming few months.
No timeline given on Bumrah's return by CoE
In the latest development, TOI has reported that there is no fixed timeline for Bumrah’s international comeback as the team management sweats hard over his fitness. The Indian seamer sustained a knee injury, and he still hasn’t recovered from it as the CoE is carefully managing his injury recovery process.
The right-arm seamer has been working hard on his recovery in the CoE, but the BCCI Centre of Excellence wants to slowly incorporate him back into the Indian setup, keeping in mind the 2027 ODI World Cup, and his injury track record in recent years.
"The CoE was working on increasing Bumrah's workload before the Test series in Sri Lanka.
It was felt that he would not be ready in time. It has been a long time since he has bowled in longer formats for a while. The CoE is very careful about him. They haven't given any timeline on him," a BCCI Source told TOI.
The Indian cricket may have to now start getting ready for life without Bumrah, at least in the Tests, the source further added.
Bumrah's knee injury worsens India's bowling issues
After the 2023 ODI World Cup final, Bumrah was not used in the ODIs as India carefully monitored his workload management. However, with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind, the pacer was picked in the Indian ODI squad for the England tour.
He looked at his imperial best before disaster struck as Bumrah sustained a knee injury in the second ODI of the series and was not picked for the deciding match, which India lost.
Despite the injury, the pacer was expected to be fit for the red-ball tour of Sri Lanka, but he was eventually ruled out as India’s plans drastically changed.

With no timeline for his return, Team India might have to find an alternate Bumrah replacement as the Asian powerhouse will play plenty of Tests in recent months.
Not only Bumrah, but Akash Deep also set to be sidelined for a long period
Not only Bumrah, but the Indian team management will also have to deal with injuries to Washington Sundar and Akash Deep.
The Bengal pacer has been out of action since January 2026 due to a stress fracture in the back, and there is no timeline for his international return as well.
"For Akash Deep, the CoE's target was to get him cricket fit by the Sri Lanka tour. That hasn't happened. Now, they haven't communicated any timeline to the team management and the selection committee. It's not easy to come back from a back injury. The team management hopes that he will be available for the tour of New Zealand which will be very crucial," TOI report stated.
He last played for India in August 2025, and since then has been out of the team due to recurring injury issues.
