Sri Lanka will take on India in a two-match Test series, starting on August 15, and the tour holds utmost importance for both teams as they are eying a spot in the WTC final. The two sides have not played their best cricket in this cycle, and a slip-up in the upcoming series could derail their journey.

Sri Lanka has been a formidable unit at home, and beating them in a two-match series will be an uphill task for the visitors. As for the hosts, they have a tricky task ahead, but it is not impossible, as Sri Lanka will eye a series clean sweep to stay alive in the race for a WTC finale spot.

Ahead of the two-match Test series against India, we take a look at how the Lankan Lions can qualify for the WTC final 2025-27. But first, let us take a look at the current WTC points table.

• As the table reveals, the Sri Lankan team is currently struggling in the WTC points table, as they languish in sixth position with just a solitary win out of the four matches played.
• Sri Lanka has a points percentage (PCT) of 41.67, and they’ll aim to improve the numbers by defeating India in the two-match series.
• On the other hand, India is just a place above them in fifth, and a series win against them would help the hosts displace the visitors in the points tally.
• Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand are the three top contenders to reach the WTC final as they stand in first, second, and third position, respectively.

How Sri Lankan can qualify for WTC final

Sri Lanka will play eight more Tests this WTC cycle, with two matches against India in the upcoming series. With Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand performing exceptionally well, Sri Lanka have their task cut out, but if the team can manage at least five wins and two draws, or six wins, from their remaining eight Tests, they will be in a strong position.

Currently, Sri Lanka has a PCT of 41.67, and to get to 60%, they need 67 more points, which they can achieve by winning five games, and earning a couple of draws.

Six wins and two losses in their remaining eight Tests will take them to 63.89%, while seven wins and a loss will take their PCT to 72.22.

Ideally, Sri Lanka will aim to win seven games out of eight, but if that’s not feasible, six wins will be their minimum target to stay in the WTC final race.

Which series can hamper Sri Lanka's WTC final chances?

Out of the four remaining Test series, Sri Lanka will play the next two at home, followed by two away Test tours. India is currently struggling in red-ball cricket, but the Asian powerhouse won their last two series in Sri Lanka (2015, 2017), and they’ll be a formidable opponent for the hosts.

Moreover, the South African away tour will also be a tricky prospect for the Lankan Lions. South Africa has always been a tough place to play for Asian teams, and the Lankan Lions might find it tough to beat the home team.

Both India and South Africa can hamper Sri Lanka’s chances of somehow reaching the WTC final 2025-27.
