In a significant development, India star bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of India's upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. Notably, the right-arm seamer has still not recovered from his knee injury. 

India are all set to tour Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series starting on August 15 and the right-arm seamer won't travel to the Island Nation.

Auqib Nabi Likely To Replace Bumrah

A report from Times of India mentioned that Jasprit Bumrah is still recovering from his left knee injury and the BCCI is not looking to rush the India seamer, fearing a relapse.

In the last couple of days, the MI star checked in at the CoE, and an initial assessment showed signs of knee discomfort. Hence, the apex cricket board of India decided to pull Bumrah out of the 15-member squad.

At present, the BCCI has not posted an official update, but Auqib Nabi is reported to be the front-runner to replace Bumrah in the India Test squad vs Sri Lanka. 

Notably, Nabi will earn his maiden India call-up if the BCCI announces him as Bumrah's replacement. Earlier, he was part of India's set-up as a net bowler during their one-off Test against Afghanistan.

2027 World Cup A Larger Picture In Mind For India

Sri Lanka is known for its spin-friendly tracks, and even before Bumrah, the spinners were getting the job done for India. If we look at the stats, the spinners have taken 2730 wickets in Sri Lanka, while the Pacers have 2062 wickets to their name. 

Hence, conditions suit spinners here more, which is why Jasprit Bumrah's absence might not hurt India a lot. Further, the bigger goal here is the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Bumrah has a tryst with injuries, and the team cannot afford to lose their star bowler for the marquee fifty-over event. Hence, the decision not to force Bumrah to travel to Sri Lanka is, in fact, a well-thought-out move by the BCCI.

Jasprit Bumrah's injury timeline since England tour, 2026

July 17, 2026 – Injury sustained

Bumrah suffered an impact injury to his left knee while fielding during the 2nd ODI against England in Cardiff. He completed the match but developed discomfort after the game.

July 18, 2026 – Medical assessment

The Indian team medical staff assessed the injury. Bumrah developed reactive swelling in his left knee, making him doubtful for the series decider.

July 19, 2026 – Ruled out of 3rd ODI

At the toss before the Lord's ODI, captain Shubman Gill confirmed Bumrah's absence.

"Jasprit Bumrah had an impact injury on his left knee while fielding in the second ODI in Cardiff. He was not available for selection for the third ODI due to reactive swelling in his left knee."

July 24, 2026 – Bumrah Undergoes Scan

Bumrah underwent scans, which reportedly revealed left knee soreness. He received an injection to reduce the inflammation. The BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) asked him to report for further assessment.
