Bangladesh tries to mend relations with BCCI [Source: AFP]
India’s impending tour of Bangladesh this year seems to be gaining traction amid the straining relations between the two countries. It is worth noting that the Indian cricket team was scheduled to tour Bangladesh in August 2025 last year.
However, the tour was subsequently postponed to September 2026. The planned series seemingly hit another roadblock after the entire Mustafizur Rahman-IPL saga for the KKR franchise, forming a chain of events that eventually led to the exclusion of the Bangladesh team from the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Bangladesh writes a letter to BCCI in hopes of improving relations
With uncertainty still circling around India’s upcoming tour of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has written an official letter to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). As confirmed by Dainik Jagran, sources close to the BCCI have also confirmed that they have received a letter from the Bangladesh board.

It is worth noting that the BCB has been making attempts to improve relations with the BCCI ever since BNP’s Tarique Rahman secured a landslide election victory to become the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh earlier this year.
Bangladesh sports minister Aminul Haque has also made efforts to mend ties with the BCCI in a bid to facilitate the much-anticipated series.
India awaiting nod from central government
While the BCB has formally reached out to revive bilateral ties, the BCCI has yet to take a final call on the tour. The report adds that the Indian board is awaiting clearance from the central government before proceeding.
As things stand, the fate of the tour remains closely tied to the evolving diplomatic climate between India and Bangladesh.
Timeline of India-Bangladesh straining cricket ties
The recent strain in India-Bangladesh cricketing ties can be traced back to developments that began unfolding around mid-last year. As per the earlier schedule, the Indian cricket team was slated to tour Bangladesh back in August 2025. However, the BCCI called off the tour amidst the rise of anti-India sentiments in Bangladesh.
In the height of rising religious persecution in Bangladesh, the KKR franchise nabbed fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman at the IPL 2026 auction. However, upon facing intense nationwide scrutiny, the BCCI forced the KKR franchise to expel the senior speedster from their IPL 2026 squad.
As one can expect, Rahman’s exclusion did not go down well with the BCB and the Bangladesh government. In response, the Bangladesh government refused to send its team to India for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup citing “security concerns”.
Demanding the ICC to relocate their tournament matches to Sri Lanka, the apex body refused to entertain BCB’s last-minute appeals and replaced the Bangladesh team with Scotland instead. Since then, the ICC has given assurance to the BCB of granting Bangladesh hosting rights to at least one ICC event in the next international cycle.
With fresh lines of communication now opening up, both boards will be hoping to put recent tensions behind them and move towards restoring bilateral cricketing ties.
