On Thursday, Team India will take on Zimbabwe in a must-win T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eight clash at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. After suffering a crushing 76-run defeat to South Africa, Suryakumar Yadav and co. find their semifinal hopes hanging by a thread.

The equation is simple yet daunting, India must win their remaining two Super Eight matches against Zimbabwe and West Indies, while also hoping other results fall in their favour. There is absolutely no room for slip-ups from this point onward.

Dew Concern at MA Chidambaram Stadium

The team plays Zimbabwe in a night fixture at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, a venue known to witness significant dew in the second innings during this time of year. Dew often makes batting easier as the ball skids onto the bat, while bowlers struggle to grip a wet and soggy ball.

To ensure fairness in this high-stakes encounter, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has turned to science.

According to a report in The Indian Express, groundstaff at the MA Chidambaram Stadium have been spraying the outfield with a special imported chemical called “Dew Cure,” brought in from the United States.

The chemical, commonly used at Major League Baseball venues in the US, was reportedly imported when the Chepauk outfield was relaid ahead of the tournament.

In preparation for the crucial clash, the ground staff mixed the solution with water and sprayed it across the outfield on the two days leading up to the match. The process is set to be repeated on Thursday afternoon.

“Once Dew Cure is sprayed, it ensures there is no moisture on the grass leaves. As soon as it gets wet, it will be absorbed and the grass leaves will turn dry,” sources familiar with the development told The Indian Express.

Notably, India trained at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on both Tuesday and Wednesday, and the team management is understood to be satisfied with the dew-free conditions.

The BCCI is also considering deploying the same method for the semifinals and final, and it could potentially be rolled out across IPL 2026 venues given the increasing influence of dew on T20 results.

MA Chidambaram Stadium’s changing nature

Interestingly, the venue has produced an uncharacteristic batting-friendly surface during this T20 tournament. Traditionally known for assisting spinners, Chepauk has offered little help to pacers in terms of movement or control, turning into something of a batting paradise.

It remains to be seen what combination India opt for with a semifinal berth on the line.

A must-win situation for team India

The qualification scenario is tight. If India defeat both Zimbabwe and West Indies, and South Africa and Zimbabwe beat West Indies, the Men in Blue will progress. However, if West Indies win even one of their remaining games against South Africa or Zimbabwe, they will have a strong chance to qualify ahead of India due to a significantly superior net run rate.

Notably, a heavy loss to South Africa has left India reeling with a net run rate of -3.8. Even two wins might not be enough unless they are emphatic victories.

If West Indies defeat South Africa in the afternoon game, India will walk into the MA Chidambaram Stadium clash against Zimbabwe knowing it is virtually do-or-die, not just to win, but to win big.
