India’s campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026 has suffered a major setback, and much of the spotlight has fallen on young opener Abhishek Sharma. The team endured a crushing 76-run defeat against the South Africa in their first Super 8 match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
As a result, both India’s campaign and Abhishek’s personal form have come under serious pressure. The Men in Blue, could not display their usual attacking batting style on a difficult pitch. Instead, they struggled against the disciplined and well-planned bowling attack of the South Africa.
Abhishek Sharma under pressure after poor form
As India entered this crucial Super 8 phase, expectations were high from Abhishek Sharma. However, the left-handed opener has been going through a very difficult run in the tournament. In fact, he registered three consecutive ducks, raising serious concerns about his form and confidence.
Moreover, after India’s disappointing defeat to South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, scrutiny on Abhishek increased further. In that match, he managed only 15 runs from 12 balls, continuing his poor run.
Overall, the Punjab-born batter has scored just 15 runs in four innings, which is a major concern for the team because he is considered the key player in India’s aggressive batting strategy.
Monty Panesar’s humorous take on Abhishek Sharma
Despite Abhishek Sharma’s lean patch, the Indian team management has continued to support him. Meanwhile, former England spinner Monty Panesar added a light-hearted angle to the discussion about the youngster’s form.
He jokingly suggested that Abhishek should stop wearing the "red patka" he usually keeps under his helmet while batting.
“Abhishek Sharma should be backed in these circumstances. But that red patka that you have been donning, just get rid of that. Probably that has been stopping runs for him," Monty Panesar told CNN-News18.

Furthermore, Panesar playfully brought astrology into the conversation while advising Abhishek to keep things simple at the crease.
“Whichever astrologer has asked you to wear that, just don’t listen to him. Leave it. Don’t put anything on your head. Just put the helmet on, take the bat, and see how many runs you score," he concluded.
Although Panesar’s remarks were clearly made in jest, they came at a time when Abhishek is struggling badly in T20 World Cup. Notably, these comments were made before the India vs South Africa clash.
How Can India Qualify for T20 World Cup 2026 Semifinal?
Mathematically, India can still top the group if it wins both remaining Super Eight matches and West Indies beat South Africa. However, because both teams already have a strong NRR, this is unlikely unless India record huge wins.
Alternatively, if South Africa lose both games and India wins both, then India and West Indies would qualify. More realistically, if both India and South Africa win their matches, South Africa will top the group while India advance second. Importantly, India plays West Indies last, so it will know its exact NRR target beforehand.
Looking ahead, team India are set to face Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday, February 24.
