Ahmedabad pitch altered for IND Vs NZ final [Source: X]
After securing a narrow win over England in the high-scoring semifinal, India are getting ready to face New Zealand in the final of the T20 World Cup 2026. However, in an interesting turn of events, it has been understood that the IND Vs NZ pitch at Narendra Modi Stadium has been altered mere hours before the high-stakes clash.
The Indian team, coached by Gautam Gambhir, will be offered a mixed-soil sporting deck in the final, set to be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Gautam Gambhir-led India management asked BCCI to resolve T20 World Cup pitch woes
The 2026 edition of the T20 World Cup has witnessed a number of nail-biting encounters. While formidable teams like India, South Africa, New Zealand and England have dominated, the likes of Zimbabwe, the United States and Italy also earned massive applause for their fighting spirit.
The pitches have played a significant role in making the T20 World Cup interesting, offering a balanced contest between bat and ball more often than not.
However, as reported by Express Sports, the Indian team management, spearheaded by Gautam Gambhir, had expressed its dissatisfaction over the nature of some of the strips they played on.

It had something to do with India's horrible collapses against the United States and South Africa, as most of their batters looked out of sorts on slightly sluggish decks. As the report claims, the Indian team management approached the BCCI, which, in turn, sent its officials to have a word with the local curators.
India to get mixed-soil pitch at Narendra Modi Stadium
With the BCCI getting involved, the IND Vs NZ pitch at Narendra Modi Stadium for the final will be different from the one where the co-hosts crumbled against South Africa.
Chasing a challenging total of 188 runs, India were bowled out for a paltry 111, losing the high-octane match by 76 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium. It was a black-soil strip, as the Indian batters found it extremely tough to get going against a disciplined Proteas bowling attack.
So, considering the final will also be staged in Ahmedabad, the IND vs NZ Pitch At Narendra Modi Stadium will be a mixed-soil strip with a higher red-soil content. The deck will be similar to the one used for South Africa Vs Canada group-stage match, which saw a run-fest from the Proteas batters.
This move is aimed at making the track more batting-friendly, as red soil often provides true pace and bounce.
India's attempt to reverse 2023 World Cup final heartbreak?
The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad has witnessed two crushing defeats of the Indian team in World Cups.
Although the Men in Blue thrashed Pakistan in front of a large crowd, they fell flat against Pat Cummins-led Australia in the 2023 World Cup final, with Travis Head single-handedly powering the tourists to the title.
Recently, the Indian side suffered another heartbreaking defeat, as South Africa emerged as their nemesis in the T20 World Cup 2026. Interestingly, it was a black-soil pitch in Ahmedabad on both these occasions.
So, the decision to alter the IND Vs NZ pitch at Narendra Modi Stadium is aimed at aligning with India's game plan, with the co-hosts eyeing redemption after the 2023 World Cup final debacle.
