WBPL 2026 postponed by BCB [Source: kaustats/X.com]
Weeks after the official announcement of the inaugural Women’s Bangladesh Premier League season, the BCB has found itself in a conundrum as the originally announced dates for the season approach. As per the announcement in February, the season was supposed to start in the first week of March, with three teams involved.
However, due to some commercial reasons, the BCB faces yet another embarrassing situation. The season, which could have helped players prepare for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, is now set to be pushed forward and will be played post the World event in England.
Inaugural WBPL season postponed
According to the original plan, after years of trying to organise the women’s version of the BPL, the board had announced the season would be played from April 3 to 15 and expected some interest from the overseas players as well. But, due to a lack of interest from the potential sponsors, the season has been put on hold and will be played in July
"We are planning to host the tournament in July rather than from April,” a BCB official confirmed on Wednesday.
This now means the Bangladesh Women’s team has no official matches scheduled till the T20 World Cup. If the situation remains the same, they will return to action directly against the Netherlands on June 14 in Birmingham for the T20 World Cup game.

Will Indians play in WBPL?
BCB’s Director and Chairperson of the Women’s Wing, Rubaba Dowla, who is also appointed as the Chairperson of the WBPL, had shown her interest in inviting Indian players to play in Bangladesh.
This was also an attempt to try and resolve issues with the BCCI, after the recent fiasco ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. According to Dowla, players from around the globe are welcomed to play in the league and the same was the case with the Indians.
The Indian team had no matches scheduled in the March window, and there could have been an outside chance that they played in the competition to prepare for the T20 mega event later this year. However, with the postponement, the players could now opt out of the tournament as they will play a one-off Test in England after the T20 World Cup.
Additionally, the Hundred Women’s Competition is to be played in July as well, where Indians have been drafted into teams. This will also mean players from other countries will skip the WBPL for the Hundred, taking away interest from the Bangladesh-based tournament.
Testing times for Bangladesh cricket
The recent months have been extremely tough for Bangladesh cricket and BCB, as they have consistently found themselves in some issue or the other. Having finished 7th in the Women's World Cup, captain Nigar Sultana was accused of physical abuse in the dressing room made by Jahanara Alam in November 2025.
In the follow-up of those events, the geopolitical tensions between India and Bangaldesh led to them skipping the T20 World Cup, resulting in significant financial losses. Now, the lack of sponsors for the WBPL puts BCB's leadership in question on how the sport is being run in the country.
Recently, director Nazmul Islam was also fired from his position as finance committee head as he revolted against BCCI and faced backlash from the players, through a strike. It will be interesting to see how they bounce back from this in the coming months.
