Zimbabwe had a solid sweep of Bangladesh in the 2nd ODI match, and adding to the woes of the visitors at Harare, the Bengal Tigers have yet another issue to address. The team have failed to meet the required criteria that the International Cricket Council sets and hence was fined by the apex cricket body.

After being slumped by the hosts with a 13-run defeat and on the verge of a clean sweep in the ODIs, Bangladesh skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz will have to navigate the upcoming atrocities with the ICC and also the performance they have been displaying in the Bangladesh Tour of Zimbabwe 2026.

Bangladesh fined by ICC for slow over rate in 2nd ODI

The Bangladesh Cricket Team has been fined by the ICC for failing to comply with the time limit for bowling overs during Zimbabwe’s innings. A slow over rate penalty has been imposed by the apex cricket body.

"Bangladesh have been fined 10 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate in the second Men’s ODI against Zimbabwe in Harare on Thursday," the official ICC statement read.

As per article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, “teams that fail to complete their overs within the allotted time are penalised based on the number of overs they are behind.”

The penalty was approved by the ICC just ahead of the 3rd and final ODI on July 11, for the July 9 match, in which Bangladesh were chasing a target of 248 runs set by the Chevrons.

Who will pay the fine for Bangladesh?

Notably, unlike leagues like the IPL, the captain will not have to bear this burden alone. The whole team of Bangladesh will contribute to the fine.

As per ICC rules, players are fined 5% of their match fees for every over their team is delayed. In this case, Bangladesh were penalized for being two overs behind the stipulated time. Hence, a 10% fine on match fees will be imposed on the players.

Notably, Bangladesh men’s cricketers receive a salary of 3.09 lakh INR for every T20I match they play in the bilaterals. Without considering the bonus and other extra winnings a player receives, the total amount the team collectively earns is approximately 34 lakh INR.

Hence, the match fee of 10% will effectively strip the team of approximately 3.4 lakh INR.

Match referee David Gilbert imposed the sanction of a fine after Bangladesh were found to be two overs short of the required over rate after time allowances were accounted for.

Is Bangladesh the first country to be fined by the ICC?

Bangladesh, however, is definitely not the first country to be punished by the ICC. The apex cricket body has effectively slashed every other major cricket-playing nation like India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, England and others for the slow over rate penalty.

The slow over rate penalty is a very common rule violation that is breached by cricket teams, especially in 2026, in an era of distractions and a pile of brand advertisements. The short breaks, strategic timeouts, and, in case of injuries and physio checkups on the field, naturally extend the stipulated time limit for playing a match.

Nevertheless, after accepting the sanction, Bangladesh will look to save their pride as they will get one last chance against Zimbabwe in the 3rd ODI at Harare to avoid a clean sweep by the hosts.
