At that point in time, everyone ignored the rumours, but fast forward two years later, and that kid turned out to be the latest cricketing sensation, and his name is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
Be it Youth ODIs, T20 games, or multi-day matches, Sooryavanshi has excelled across formats, and so much so that at just 15, he was picked in the Indian T20I team for the first time for the UK tour.
The southpaw finished as the leading run-getter in the IPL 2026, and suddenly, Sooryavanshi has become the talk of the town as the world wants to see the youngster succeed for India.
The rise of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the last two years
Sooryavanshi hogged the limelight when the Rajasthan Royals purchased him for a huge price in the IPL 2025 mega auction. The franchise spent 1.10 crore on him, and eyebrows were raised as many expected Sooryavanshi to flop in front of the big boys.
However, the left-handed batter silenced his critics and became the league’s best batter. Throughout IPL 2025, and IPL 2026, Sooryavanshi broke numerous records to become everyone’s favourite.
Not only in the IPL, but the Indian batter has also weaved his magic playing for India A and the Under-19 side. His best performance came in the Under-19 World Cup final in 2026.
In the finale against England, the opener punished the England bowlers and smacked 175 off 80 balls to help his team win yet another Under-19 championship. No longer does the opposition treat him like a kid; rather, they celebrate his dismissal, knowing that they have got rid of a world-class batter.

"See, we don't count the balls, how many balls he played, but I will give you a minimum estimate, that he played more than 600 balls. I'll tell you how. Around 200-300 balls, I used to give throwdowns all by myself. And when I got tired, there were other support staff, who used to help me.
And when they got tired, there were bowlers from our academy who used to help them. And sometimes even they got exhausted, and if there was time still left, they used to make 2-3 groups, and whatever was told to them, they used to bowl," Manish Ojha said to PTI.
Sooryavanshi recently broke Tendulkar's long-standing record
After an outstanding IPL 2026 season where he scored 776 runs, and swept away numerous IPL awards, Sooryavanshi was picked in the Indian T20I squads for the Ireland, and England tour.
In the process, he became the youngest player ever selected for the senior men's national team. At 15 years and 71 days, the Rajasthan Royals opener created a world record for India and shattered Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing feat, who received his maiden call-up at 16 years.
The left-handed batter has a long career ahead of him, and in the upcoming years, Sooryavanshi can break dozens of records if he stays fit and continues to dominate.
