Bangladesh players are set to receive a huge cash bonus for securing a historic ODI series win over Australia at home. Youth and Sports Minister Aminul Haque declared the bonus for the winning players through his press secretary in a media release on Saturday, June 13, i.e., a day prior to the series dead-rubber in Dhaka.

It is worth noting that the outcome marked Bangladesh’s first-ever ODI series win over Australia, and the win in the first ODI marked Bangladesh’s first win over Australia in a 50-overs international after a gap of 21 years.

Bangladesh cricketers have received a massive boost from the nation’s government in the form of a cash bonus. Aminul Haque’s press secretary Ashraful Alam confirmed the same during a media release just a day prior to the third ODI of the series between the two sides.

Significance of Bangladesh’s ODI series win

Bangladesh started off the ODI series by winning the first ODI by 86 runs (DLS method). Batting first, the hosts mounted 284-8 in 50 overs courtesy of half-centuries from opener Tanzid Hasan, number three Najmul Hossain Shanto and hard-hitting Mosaddek Hossain (86* off 70).

A four-wicket haul from Nahid Rana and wickets for Mustafizur Rahman and Mosaddek restricted Australia to just 191-9 in 42.2 overs in a rain-curtailed game. The outcome marked Bangladesh’s first ODI win over Australia in 21 years, i.e., since 2005 when a century from Mohammad Ashraful helped Bangladesh overcome the then world champions in Cardiff during a tri-series in England.

Mere two days after ending its ODI drought against Australia, Bangladesh secured yet another emphatic outcome in Dhaka, this time by five wickets in the second match to seal the ODI series with a game to spare.

With Mustafizur Rahman and others restricting Australia to just 187-8 in 42 overs, the hosts comfortably chased down the target in just 35 overs courtesy of attacking 40s from Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto and unbeaten Towhid Hridoy.

The outcome took Bangladesh 2-0 up as they registered their first-ever ODI series win over Australia, either home or away.

Bangladesh assume command in third ODI despite early wickets

Under the leadership of interim captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh batted first in the third ODI at the Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Sunday, June 14. The hosts lost both in-form openers, Soumya Sarkar and Tanzid Hasan within the first 10 overs to slip to 53-2, and eventually to 61-3 after the loss of captain Shanto.

Litton Das at number four counterattacked with a sublime 48 before getting retired hurt. The blistering wicketkeeper-batter shared 92 runs for the fourth wicket with Towhid Hridoy to steer Bangladesh past the 150-run mark.

At the time of publishing, Bangladesh reached 182-3 in 37 overs.
