England T20I and ODI captain Harry Brook has showcased a hidden aspect of his cricketing abilities while turning out for his county club, Yorkshire, in the ongoing County Championship match against Warwickshire.

This was Harry Brook’s first County Championship appearance in more than a year, in the game that was played in Birmingham. The game saw Warwickshire defeat Yorkshire by 377 runs and gain important points in the ongoing championship.

Harry Brook’s batting outcome for Yorkshire

Warwickshire batted first in the game against Yorkshire and scored 147 runs in the first innings, with Sam Hain (57) and Ethan Bamber (28) being the top-scorers. Jack White took 4/49 for Yorkshire, while Benjamin Cliff, George Hill, and Logan van Beel took two wickets apiece for Yorkshire.

In response, Yorkshire made 152 runs, with Harry Brook and James Wharton making 40. For Warwickshire, Oliver Hannon-Dalby took 4/38, while Jordan Thompson took 3/14 for Yorkshire.

Chasing 549 runs to win the game, Yorkshire was bowled out for 171 runs, with Hary Brook making 26 before falling to Jordan Thompson to a return catch. Yorkshire lost the game by 377 runs.

Harry Brook shows off his bowling prowess

Warwickshire had a gala time in the second innings. Rob Yates gave the perfect start with 81 runs, while Sam Hain made 164* with 16 fours to his name. Dan Mousley made 70, while captain Ed Bernard (60) and Zen Malik (57) enjoyed themselves with the bat as well. Warwickshire declared their second innings for 553/6.

Yorkshire bowlers had to work very hard to pick those 6 wickets, and captain Jonny Bairstow gave ample bowling to Harry Brook as well. With their frontline bowlers tiring, Yorkshire cycled through their all-rounders in Matthew Revis, as well as spinner Dom Bess.

In what proved to be the longest spell of bowling he has done in county cricket, Brook bowled 18 overs, with 4 of them maidens. He gave away 66 runs but couldn’t pick any wickets.

Harry Brook bowls his longest spell in first-class cricket

After sending down ten overs by the end of the second day, Brook had to bowl eight more overs at his medium speed on the third day before Warwickshire called it quits. These 18 overs were the most he had bowled in an innings in an FC game.

In 2021, he returned figures of 0-37 during a 17-over bowling spell against Lancashire, which was his previous best.

Brook has had some noteworthy success when turning his arm over, even though he is not typically asked to bowl for lengthier stretches at the county or England level. In the Wellington Test of 2023, which New Zealand won by one run, he was called upon to bowl for the first time in a Test match.

He dismissed Kane Williamson in his second over by catching him down the leg side. Brook has lost 16 overs in Tests since that game, and that is still his only international wicket.

Harry Brook readies for the New Zealand challenge

While some of his England teammates are busy playing in the Indian Premier League, Harry Brook is readying himself for the New Zealand challenge. New Zealand will be touring England for a three-Test series.

The first Test of the series will begin on June 4, and it will be played at the Lord’s ground. The second Test of the series is set to be played at the Oval from June 17 onwards. The third and final Test will be played at Nottingham starting June 25.
