It is not an understatement to say that the RCB Vs MI IPL 2026 match in Raipur on Sunday was the match of the tournament. The fans were bored with watching 230-plus games, and they got to witness a 160-run classic as the defending champions edged out the Mumbai Indians in a close-fought contest.
The match went down to the wire, as RCB needed a tricky 167 on a challenging Raipur surface, and the target was attained on the last ball as Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Rasikh Salam sealed the deal, and eliminated Mumbai from the IPL playoff race.
However, despite RCB’s win, one of their key player, Tim David, was at the centre of controversy, as he made an offensive gesture after his team’s thrilling IPL 2026 win.
Tim David goes over the top with rude gesture after RCB's win
RCB needed 15 off the last over, and the team suffered a jolt as Romario Shepherd was dismissed on the third delivery, with the side still needing 10 off 3 balls. This is when Bhuvneshwar Kumar became his team’s surprise weapon with the bat as he smacked a six, and Rasikh Dar completed a double on the last ball to snatch the win from the jaws of defeat.
The entire RCB team dugout went wild with their celebration, but David created a controversy as the former Mumbai Indians player could be seen giving the middle-finger gesture to his former team, as the video went viral quickly.
BCCI takes action, punishes Tim David
It was widely expected that the IPL governing body would take action against the RCB player, and in the latest development, the BCCI has punished Tim David, and the hard-hitting batter has been booked under Article 2.6 (showing an offensive gesture).
He has been penalised 30 percent of his match fee, and two demerit points have been given as the player has accepted the punishment.
"Article 2.6 includes, without limitation, obscene gestures which are not directed at another person. When assessing the seriousness of the breach, the following factors (without limitation) shall be taken into account: (i) the context of the particular situation; and (ii) whether the gesture is likely to: (a) be regarded as obscene; (b) give offence; or (c) insult another person," the IPL Code of Conduct states.

Tim David's long history with Mumbai Indians
Before making a name for himself with the RCB side, the Australian batter, Tim David represented the Mumbai Indians, and he was bought ahead of the IPL 2022 season.
He had a reputation to take down the attack with ease, and David was expected to become the next Kieron Pollard for the former IPL winners. However, under the MI management, he never really flourished.
The right-handed batter played 37 matches for the Mumbai Indians side, and scored 658 runs, with an average of 29, and a strike rate of 171.
He never fulfilled his potential, and before the IPL 2025 season, the franchise released him, and RCB acquired his services. In his maiden campaign for them, David smacked 187 crucial runs, and helped the side clinch their maiden IPL title.
