Mumbai Indians fell to a crushing defeat against age-old rivals CSK in match number 33 of the IPL 2026 season. Chasing over 200 runs for a win, the hosts capitulated at just 104 in 19 overs at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
The outcome marked Mumbai Indians’ fifth defeat of IPL 2026 in just seven matches to fall to the brink of a certain elimination in the season’s playoffs race. It appears that captain Hardik Pandya seems to be contemplating sweeping changes to the side’s combination as Mumbai Indians scramble to revive their faltering campaign.
Struggling fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and fellow senior pro Suryakumar Yadav might find themselves under increasing scrutiny, with their places in the playing XI no longer guaranteed as per Pandya’s latest remarks.
Hardik Pandya hints big changes in Mumbai Indians XI
Hardik Pandya seems to have dropped an indirect hint of making some radical changes in the Mumbai Indians playing composition going ahead this IPL 2026 season. While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, the star all-rounder was asked if one can expect some “personnel changes” in the team.

Pandya responded “I think that will be the chat where we will go back to again, go forward and figure out what we need to do. We have a couple of days. We just need to see what we can do best.”
While Hardik Pandya did not single out any individual, senior team members like Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav might come under consideration for changes based on their recent performances.
Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar struggling to re-create World Cup heroics
Jasprit Bumrah, who picked up the joint-highest number of wickets in India’s 2026 T20 World Cup win last month, is struggling to recreate his heroics for the Mumbai Indians franchise this IPL 2026 season.
For starters, it took him six matches to pick his first wicket of the season, and has so far nabbed just two scalps in seven innings at an expensive bowling average of 105.
Even Suryakumar Yadav has managed to aggregate just 156 runs in seven innings of the tournament at a below par average of 22.28. He scored 51 of those runs in a single innings against the Delhi Capitals, albeit in a losing cause.
Mumbai Indians enter must-win territory
With just two wins in seven games, the Mumbai Indians franchise need to win at least six of its remaining seven matches in a bid to remain in contention for the IPL 2026 playoffs.
With four points and a dismal NRR of -0.736, they are currently placed at number eight on the IPL 2026 points table, leading only fellow struggling teams like LSG and KKR.
As per the schedule, the Hardik Pandya-led side will now face the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in match number 41 of the tournament. The match will also be hosted by the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and will be played on Wednesday, April 29 next week.
