The anticipation surrounding MS Dhoni's return to the IPL 2026 is building with each passing day. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have finally provided clarity on his availability, fitness, and his role once he returns to action.

It is important to note that Dhoni was sidelined due to a calf injury just before the start of the season and has not featured in any game this season. Despite initial expectations of a quick return, his recovery has taken longer than anticipated.

However, recent developments suggest that the veteran wicketkeeper-batter is progressing and might soon play the first match of the season for the ‘Yellow Army’.

CSK's performance so far in IPL 2026 without MS Dhoni's guidance

In MS Dhoni's absence, CSK have had a rollercoaster start to their IPL 2026 campaign. The team struggled early on, losing three of its first four matches. However, they have since managed to recover, winning crucial matches against Delhi Capitals, KKR and Mumbai Indians.

CSK provides major update on MS Dhoni's injury

CSK batting coach Michael Hussey recently shared an important update on Dhoni's recovery. He mentioned that Dhoni has resumed training and is actively participating in net sessions, including wicketkeeping drills.

Recently, the franchise also released a video of MS Dhoni in the nets.

Hussey also confirmed that Dhoni is batting well and looks in good touch, but emphasised that the primary concern remains his ability to run between the wickets without discomfort.

“He’s progressing really well. I know he’s pushing hard to return as soon as possible, and the fans are eager to see MS Dhoni back on the field. We’re hopeful it could be in the next few games, but he needs to be close to 100% to give his best. He’s been batting well in the nets and looks in good touch, now it’s also about being able to run hard between the wickets,” Hussey told the broadcasters.

Michael Hussey gives massive update on Dhoni's role

Clarifying Dhoni's role upon his return, Michael Hussey stated that the veteran is expected to resume duties as a full-time wicketkeeper rather than playing as a specialist batter or impact substitute.

However, Michael Hussey stressed that wicketkeeping comes with its own physical challenges, especially in terms of movement and endurance.

"I’m quite sure he’ll be back behind the stumps. The main concern is the calf injury, it’s about the running, especially late in the innings when he may need to push hard for ones and twos. He just needs to ensure the calf is strong enough to handle that workload. From a skill perspective, we know exactly what Dhoni can do as a wicketkeeper, and he’s batting really well. It’s now about regaining full confidence in that calf,” Hussey added.

Will MS Dhoni Return in CSK vs GT Match?

With CSK set to face Gujarat Titans on April 26, the big question remains whether Dhoni will finally play. While he has been training consistently, there is still no official confirmation on whether he will play the much-awaited CSK vs GT match.

It is vital to note that the CSK's team management appears cautious and is not willing to risk until and unless Dhoni is 100% fit.
