India head coach Gautam Gambhir has come under the spotlight after former India pacer S. Sreesanth made some strong comments about him. At the same time, there are ongoing rumours regarding the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in India’s squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

With the tournament approaching, discussions about India’s senior players have become a major topic. Many people are wondering whether Kohli and Rohit will continue to be part of India's plans.

S Sreesanth Backs Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma

During an appearance on The Lallantop's show Guest in the Newsroom, Sreesanth was asked about the relationship between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir.

The question was: "People say Virat Kohli & Gautam Gambhir don't have the best relationship, which is why Virat and Rohit's place in the 2027 World Cup isn't clear. What do you think?"

In response, Sreesanth shared his views and also highlighted the achievements of Kohli and Rohit.  It is also worth mentioning that Gambhir retired from international cricket with 10,324 runs across all formats for India.

"Gambhir retired with around 10,000 international runs. Virat & Rohit have already gone far beyond that and continue to perform at the highest level. Selection for the 2027 World Cup should be based on form, fitness, and performance—not personal relationships, " Sreesanth said.

Meanwhile, Sreesanth also spoke about former India pacer Ashish Nehra and praised his style of coaching. He said, “If you are a coach like Ashish Nehrapaji, the it's fine. He is involved in everything.”

It is important to note that Ashish Nehra is currently the head coach of Gujarat Titans in the IPL. Ashish Nehra joined the franchise before the 2022 season and has already guided the team to one IPL title. In addition, Gujarat Titans have reached two IPL finals under his leadership.

Furthermore, the franchise has qualified for the playoffs four times in five seasons, missing out only once in 2024.

Gautam Gambhir’s Record As India Head Coach

Gautam Gambhir enjoyed considerable success as a mentor and coach in the IPL. As India’s head coach, his record in white-ball cricket has been impressive. On the other hand, the team has faced some challenges in red-ball cricket.

Notably, Gambhir began his coaching journey with Team India during the tour of Sri Lanka. Since then, India have achieved significant success under his guidance. The team won the Asia Cup 2025 and the T20 World Cup 2026.

In ODIs, the start was less convincing. India lost the ODI series against Sri Lanka 2-0, while one match ended in a tie. However, the team responded strongly and won eight consecutive ODI matches, including the Champions Trophy 2025.

Since that period, India have played 11 ODIs, winning six and losing five. The team also suffered a series of defeats against New Zealand in January.

As of now, Gautam Gambhir remains the head coach of the Indian cricket team. His current contract runs until the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Moreover, reports suggest that the former Indian opener could receive an extension that would keep him in charge until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the T20 World Cup.
