After a freak injury forced India spinner Shreyanka Patil out of the India vs Netherlands match on June 17, the BCCI have officially ruled her out of the Women’s T20 World Cup with a media release on June 19.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women star has been one of the most promising talents with the ball for India coming to the World Cup.

She impressed with her skills in the warm-up matches; however, a twisted ankle sealed her fate as India named a replacement for Shreyanka Patil and ruled her out of the entire World Cup.

Why Was Shreyanka Patil Ruled Out of the World Cup?

Patil twisted her ankle while trying to field a ball she had bowled. In the sixth over of the Netherlands’ batting innings, Patil bowled a flighted delivery to Phebe Molkenboer, which the batter drove to midwicket.

In an attempt to cut the ball’s path towards the boundary, Patil went low to collect the ball, but her right foot landed on the ball awkwardly.

This had her ankle twisted, and she was left in severe pain on the ground. Patil was seen holding her right foot in pain as physios rushed in, and she was carried off the field on a buggy.

The nature of the injury Patil suffered on the ground called for a replacement since it looked like an injury that would need some time to heal.

Acting on the replacement, India named Prema Rawat as a replacement for Shreyanka Patil in the India squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Prema Rawat To Fill In For Patil

Prema Rawat, a right-arm leg break bowler, will join the India Women's squad for the rest of the tournament as a replacement for Patil. Not in the travelling reserves, Rawat earned her maiden call-up for the nation after a semi-impressive Asia Cup Rising Stars 2026 performance.

Rawat, who was already in England for the India A tour, will now join the Women’s T20 World Cup squad. However, Rawat is not a like-for-like replacement for Patil, who was an all-rounder, but her spin bowling attributes are set to come in handy for the Women in Blue in England conditions.

Prema represented RCB-W in the WPL and impressed with a two-wicket haul in the only match she played in the 2026 edition.

Her inclusion underlines the fact that India Women is currently bolstering their spin department, which already has firepowers like Deepti Sharma to tackle the all-rounder department.

India Women To Continue Dominance Without Shreyanka Patil

With or without Shreyanka, India looks forward to dominating under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur. India currently leads in Group A with two wins from two matches and at a solid net run rate of +3.975.

They will face South Africa next on June 21, followed by their last group stage fixture against Bangladesh on June 25. If India manages to win even one of their last two encounters, it is very likely that they will qualify for the knockout stage.
