Just days after PCB declared Fakhar Zaman unfit for the ODI series against Bangladesh, the senior player showed off his athleticism while taking a blinder catch in the National T20 Cup. 

These contradicting incidents left fans and former cricketers puzzled. However, after social media blew up with all sorts of claims, Fakhar himself addressed the matter and shut it down for good.

Fakhar Zaman defied ‘injury’ to pick a blinder

During a recent Pakistan National T20 Cup game between Abbottabad Region and Lahore Region Whites, Fakhar Zaman took a flying catch to dismiss Mohammad Faiq.

Bowler Shahab Khan delivered a full ball on the stumps, angling slightly away. Faiq tried to drive through the off-side, aiming past mid-off. Fakhar, meanwhile, was fielding at mid-off and reacted instantly.

He moved quickly to his right and dived forward. Despite the pace of the shot, he managed to grab a clean, low catch. 

Fakhar Zaman completed the catch, picked himself up nicely and celebrated the wicket with his team. At no point in the entire incident did Fakhar appear unfit, uncomfortable or in pain.

Were Fakhar Zaman’s injury claims untrue?

This catch left Pakistan cricket puzzled because just days earlier, Fakhar Zaman was ruled out of the Bangladesh ODI series due to injury. Both Zaman and Babar Azam were dropped, citing fitness issues.

However, with Fakhar taking an active part in the National T20 Cup, questions were bound to be raised. Former cricketer Abdur Rauf, meanwhile, questioned this contradiction publicly.

Seeing his outrage, Fakhar Zaman stepped in to cool down the matter. He admitted he was not fully fit for ODI cricket and supported selector Aaqib Javed, saying the decision to leave him out was correct.

Zaman also confirmed he only returned after passing fitness tests on March 15. Basically, the batter accepted he was injured earlier but is now fit again.

Connection to Babar Azam controversy

This issue is linked to Babar Azam as well. Aaqib Javed said both Fakhar and Babar had injuries after the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. PCB even launched an inquiry into their injuries.

As for Babar, he mocked PCB’s claim with cryptic social media activities, suggesting the injury claim was not true. However, later, journalists contradicted Babar again, saying the senior played through the T20 World Cup while carrying a foot injury.

That niggle worsened after the tournament, and he was immediately treated. Hence, Babar Azam chose to skip the National T20 Cup.

Overall, the PCB messed up this situation big time through poor communication and conflicting explanations. While Aaqib Javed cited injuries, Mike Hesson called it a rest, creating confusion. 

Delayed clarity and players’ own responses further muddied the narrative. This mismanagement has put transparency, coordination, and decision-making within PCB under fire, turning a routine selection matter into a major controversy.
